Yes – my wife ended up making the barefoot sandals herself after we couldn’t find anything quite like what we had in mind. We looked around in shops and online, but everything either completely covered the sole or didn’t give enough warmth over the top of the foot. She wanted something that would feel almost like being barefoot, but with just a hint of insulation for those crisp winter days.

The design she came up with is pretty simple but works beautifully – soft cloth over the top, shaped so it doesn’t slip, and a light strap that keeps everything in place without tightening around the foot. The sole is left completely open, so there’s still that direct contact with the ground. They’ve ended up being surprisingly versatile; the girls wear them not just in frost, but also on cool early spring mornings when the earth is damp and chilly.

It’s funny – once you adopt barefoot living as the default, you start to see footwear more as a set of accessories for certain conditions rather than something that’s always necessary. And watching them run around at places like the Christmas market, with bare soles and a grin that says they’re perfectly comfortable, reinforces how natural it can be when the body is given time to adapt. The contrast of pink toes against a backdrop of wool coats and heavy boots really makes you realize how different “normal” can look depending on the choices you make.
