I guess we were lucky, there's no written rule that shoes must be worn in school. Our children's school has a rule that no outdoor shoes are worn inside. They are taken off at the locker room, according to the rules they would put on house shoes but in practice a lot are in socks or barefoot in school. We pointed out at a parent-teacher meeting that all our children are barefoot inside and outside for reasons of health. It's tolerated as long as they wipe their feet and drag no dirt in.
In summer there are a number of others who slip off their shoes at the door and go barefoot inside. In other seasons, according to my kids there are a lot in just socks.

For sports/gym class the rule is "indoor sports shoes, those who forget to bring their things must participate barefoot". I guess you can imagine how all our kids interpret that rule, we never even bothered to get them "indoor sports shoes" and their barefoot performance is just fine!

So the only occasion they bring shoes is for excursions (insurance policy); even then they often take them off and put them in their backpack. And on freezing cold days in winter they wear shoes, mittens and wool caps on the way, getting rid of it all as soon as they are inside.
