Oh, believe me, I've thought of that many times.

The problem with any LCD, no matter its source, is getting the analogue video signal from the desktop Mac's motherboard into digital format for the LCD to use. Even PowerBook LCDs used an onboard LCD controller similar in function (if not chipset) to the EarthLCD ones John Stocker just mentioned. The problem with PowerBooks (and, indeed, all notebooks that I've seen) is there's no easy way to separate the controller and the rest of the 'Book. If there was, you can believe I would have already tried this :)

If it were as simple as removing the controller and re-wiring the inputs to the CC's analogue board, that would be a non-issue. Unfortunately, the controllers are actually built into the motherboards :(
