The willingness of the 6500 board to work points away from a SCSI issue, but I'll investigate.

Since your 6400 board without a 3.3v supply behaves exactly like my 6400 board in an installation which is supposed to have a 3.3v supply leads me to suspect that that supply is 'iffy'. In the past, I'd not considered that a possibility, since the 6500 board works. Now John Stocker has said that 6500 boards can survive without a 3.3v line, it's a whole new ball game!
