Subject: Kept in Pull Ups instead of Underwear?

In my street lives a family with 4 kids, 3 boys and a girl. The boys are 16, 14 and 10, the girl is 15 y/o. I've known them all their lives.

I was at the park with my own son who is in diapers at night, with the neighbors 14 y/o playing basketball, when he stumbled right in front of me. His shorts sagged a bit by this action, making me aware that the kid was wearing pull-ups. I helped him stand up, he thanked me and went on playing.

When we happened to walk home together, I asked him about his painful fall. He said it didn't hurt, but he was afraid his pull-ups were torn a bit. He said it so casually that I dared asking him if he had problems with peeing, because he was wearing these? Then he told me their mother has some sort of fear of stains, this made her decide not to buy the boys regular underwear, but she puts them in tape on diapers for the night, and pull-ups for the day. So they never wore briefs or boxer shorts, the 14 y/o told me. Of course, they have protested when they were younger and saw all other kids with common underwear, at least he and his older brother have, but their mom insisted and didn't buy them regular undies even though the girl is allowed to wear panties and helps out with the boys.

The boy told me that he is used to them now, his family and friends have known about their protective undies for years, so he doesn't get teased by anyone. He admitted he actually likes the comfortable fit and safe feeling they give him, although he isn't a bedwetter. The kid admitted he has had some daytime accidents last year, when he was very busy online gaming. Only when he was getting ready for bed, he found out that he had peed in his pull-ups. He hadn't told his mom, he sneaked his pull-ups in the garbage can.

His older brother still has nighttime accidents every once in a while, so he really needs nighttime protection, but he has been dry by day all his life.

His sister has stayed dry since she was potty-trained as a toddler, his little brother has had nighttime accidents until he was 7, but is dry since then.

I can understand that a mother makes her kids wear protection when they are prone to having wetting accidents, but this is the first time I hear that a mother never lets her children wear ordinary undies. My own kid wears diapers for bedwetting but he usually has regular undies during the daytime. I've been asked to babysit them this summer too so not sure how that will work.
