Subject: Coaching is still the Problem
While I'm happy that Fairfield won yesterday I think it could have been an easier win. I think we can all agree that TOT's first mistake was taking out a team that was on a 10-2 run. I have never seen a coach make the moves O'Toole does. If the team you have in is hot don't sit them on the bench. Number 2 mistake, and we have all been saying this, TOT doesn't let his players get in a rhythm. He subs players in and out at the wrong times. Robbie scored three baskets in a row and made some big defensive plays and what does O'Toole do, that's right pulls him. I just don't understand his rationality for what he does. Garcia has been having some huge games and O'toole is not using him to his full ability. Let the kid stay in for 15 minutes and I can guarantee we'll all see some huge plays. And why are our biggest guys playing the perimeter? Ajou and Deng take more three pointers than our guards. If any of our other guys like Delfico or Bell took some of those off the mark shots that the Dengs do they would be pulled out immediately. How are these guys supposed to get any confidence in their shots when they're always second guessing whether to take them or not? Whether they will get reamed out when they return to the bench, even when they make them. TOT may be a good recruiter, but he has proven in his time at Fairfield that he is not a bench coach. If Ruland or Gonzalez were heading up our team, we would be unstoppable. We have such a deep, talented bench that TOT doesn't know what to do with these guys. Sorry TOT but it's time to go.

You make some excellent points. I agree with you about pulling the guys out that went on a 10-2 run. Totally Inane. The Thompson move was bizarre too. We should have beaten Yale handily.
I can't agree about The Dengs. They went a combined 0-2 from three point range and Ajou was one of our most effective three points shooters last year (over 40%). He is not as strong a post player. Also one of Ajou's shot's was taken with the shot clock under 10 seconds. If you have a good look in that situation you have to take it.
I agree that with our talent level, another coach would be 8-3. But the question is, would another coach have been able to recruite our talent level?

I guess we have to ask ourselves the question of whether we want a winning team or a team full of talent that can't win. If Fairfield keeps having losing seasons even O'Toole won't be able to get the recruits. I think we should look at getting someone in here who can actually provide direction for the players. Half the time it doesn't look like TOT knows what he is doing out there. The time has come to get a coach that will mold the talent and not break it down.

Rebuilding Stag Bball Tradition with TOT -- WS Stag, 14:41:59 01/06/03 Mon
RF: I am sorry that your glass is half empty, mine is half full. Your story is yesterdays news. We have a winning record. We were 91-162 with 3 winning seasons from MAAC inception until TOT started. Ouch! The Stags are 37 and 37 in the MAAC with TOT. He now has talent and is winning. Are there bumps? Yes. I love Stag hoops as you do, but results count. Gene Doris should re-up Tim and staff now so that it does not hinder recruiting.

We are giving him ample time to prove hs worth. A great recruiter, yes. A great game coach? Not even close. Yes there has been improvement in the league and we have voluntarily been spoon fed to the nation's elite programs now for the past five years but everyone is waiting to see the marked improvement and consistent 15+ win seasons. I have a feeling that if that's not the case this year, Doris might be compelled to make a change...
