Subject: Meaningfull Quote from Thais Celeberto
After Women beat St Peters in Alumni Hall.....
"It was great," junior Thais Celiberto said. "If this many people (425) were in the Arena, it would feel kind of empty. I liked it." Coach Dianne Nolan said it was an easier adjustment for her than her players. "You're in a routine for two years, and all of a sudden you're taken out of your routine," she said. "It hit me when we were walking in and I said to Kate Hammerer, 'This is kind of weird.' And she looked at me and said, 'Yeah, I've never seen a game here.' "
With all the discussions on this board, about Women playing in the Bridgeport Arena..... the St Peters game might have been the deciding factor. Women should only play in the Arena on weekend double headers, and only if they can schedule UCONN, Tennessee, or Notre Dame.
Listen to Thais

I was there for that game and a number of students attended. Women should head back to campus except for big games/doubleheaders!

Unequal Treatment? -- Stagman, 08:38:49 02/28/03 Fri
Some might construe talk like this as discriminatory (i.e. "Why shouldn't the women have the same right as the men to play in a new state-of-the-art arena"?). I suspect the National Organization of Women would take offense at the comments above.
I, for one, think it is a good idea.

Women should make the RIGHT decision -- JoeStag, 08:52:59 02/28/03 Fri
You can't tell women what to do. They have to make up their own mind :) Coach Nolan needs to listen to Thais Celeberto, and listen to her Fans..... like STAGAL.
Women should make the RIGHT decision.... I think they will.

for the time being... -- STAGAL, 08:59:59 02/28/03 Fri
It's not about unequal treatment, it's about playing before 200 or fewer people in an arena meant for 9K. It's about avoiding embarassment. Have you ever attended such games there? When/if the women improve and begin to draw larger crowds, or are playing a major opponent/weekend doubleheader, then they could move game to Bpt.

The logical pursuit is to allow the "market forces" to prevail. Regretably, we are in a politically correct environment which harms all, especially the women, who they blindly presume to speak for.

One of the bigger women's fans here is fine w/most @Alumni, some @Arena -- Menzies, 20:24:34 02/28/03 Fri
I probably one of the bigger women's team fans on this board. I am fine with most women's games at Alumni Hall and some at the Arena.
As a fan, the Arena is not enticing. The only real advantage is that you can have a beer. Its expensive and cold. The atmosphere, even for the men, is not there yet (ever?). Expensive, lousy food served by incompetents. Its a nice new facility that on the face of it evidently impresses recruits. Are they really impressed when it is 1/4 filled? Wouldn't the recruits start to realize the potential of the Arena isn't happening.

It would be an easier decision were the university to upgrade the facility. You don't have to gut it, but Alumni Hall needs some serious work.

The women have the same right as men to play games in a location conducive to the development and success of their program.
Is Harbor yards that place, or Alumni hall, or somewhere else ? If Harbor Yards is a place they feel uncomfortable and cannot draw fans in to watch them, maybe it isn't the place.
Why does it have to be a matter of "rights" as opposed to what makes sense for the program ? If the law prevents this, then the law is flawed ?

She is right on the money. Reference the JS post (and CT Post article) about Jermaine Clark and the atmosphere at the recent UB game. Put that 1,000 in the Arena and the noise level would have gotten swallowed up. Need to match the facility with realistic (accent on realistic) fan base to maximize game atmosphere. Stags vs high-profile opponent -- Harbor Yards. Stags vs mid-tier teams, Alumni Hall. Just my realistic opinion.

Re: Meaningfull Quote from Thais Celeberto -- fustag, 10:42:38 02/28/03 Fri
rumor has it that the women will be going back to alumni next year, and diane has even offered to. but it will not be for all the games, games such as siena, manhattan etc, and other big time maac games will most likely be played in the arena. also for example, it's very likely that the women can be opening, at harbor yards, against well, should i say UCONN. they will definately draw a sell out crowd for that game. Something the men have yet to do. Maybe with the women returning such big players, having UCONN come in and the men playig DUKE, it might be that year for the arena to get some fans in it. also the men will play some games in alumni, it's just to get the students more active. there has been some games where the women would have not been able to fit all of its fan in alumni, so therefore the arena served it's purpose. but this is all in the early stages now.
