Went to my 4th men’s game of the year. Ten year old grandson loves going to the games and NU administration does its part in making the game a good experience. Last night Thurman Thomas was there and available for pictures. Two of the three losses we saw were last second baskets by opposing teams. In two of those there was virtually no one in the N zone. Last night it was filled with the championship men’s and women’s swimming teams who were acknowledged at halftime and I thought it would be a lot more fun having a loud student presence. They spent the first half scrolling their phones and 90% left after being recognized instead of staying to watch the second half. Team could use a boisterous student section in these close games and I wish my grandson could see the crazy fans that were in the N zone years ago. Made the games a lot more fun.

The school mostly clears out on he weekends now.

The school also has a much different make up than I can ever remember. Very good for the overall make up of the school maybe not so great for the sports teams and support.

Remember, all of this has been done by design. NU has made it a point to try and get past the "fun, party school" vibe. The student population now has far more foreign students and far more diversity. These diverse groups generally are not the ones ripping beers before a game, going nuts at the game, and going to the bars immediately after the games.

NU hockey thought they cracked the code for attendance when they started selling beer at the games. It didn't work. As someone put here awhile ago---GC is an old barn. When its packed its an awesome throw back. Loud, intimating, intimate. When it is not, it is just plain sad. The same can be said for what they have done to Dwyer. There is nothing more depressing than some crazy laser light show as the teams come on the ice with 200 people in the stands.

Student support has been terrible for at least 10 to 15 years. Well before diversity or other reasons.

When it's status quo losing year in and year out, there's nothing to be excited for or to be proud about.

Niagara needs a shot of enthusiasm and something to shout about.

When Niagara has gone to the NCAA tournament, you noticed an entirely different vibe about it. Unfortunately, you can't have decades between such events or the school environment turns stagnant. What you have now is that stagnant , hopeless, and void environment.

It's one thing if such an environment happens by accident, it's quite another thing when your school perpetuates and fosters it through an uncaring attitude.

Absolutely, Joe. This period in NU basketball history feels so much different than others during NU's history. It's like your in an endless tunnel of obscurity. Niagara has always had its share of losing seasons and droughts, but I have never felt so awful about the state of Purple Eagle basketball as I do today. I guess the difference is that I don't see any way out of it given the atmosphere and conditions of the present situation. It just seems like an endless conveyor system of nothingness. I do not believe any ordinary coach and staff can win under the current scheme of things. It would take a big name coach who could attract very good players to enroll and transfer to Niagara and that ain't happening for obvious reasons. either Paulus is going to get very lucky in the portal and give us a good season here and there, or he is just gonna eventually fade away to another position somewhere else as an assistant coach with the help of Coach K. I don't see a happy ending to Niagara basketball. I see it either dropping to D-2 or D-3, or eventually, ending the sport for good.

Naw, Niagara will never drop down to D-2, it'll just keep losing in D-1.

This gets revisited from time to time here but when you have a competitive team that has something it can shoot for, that's your best chance of getting whatever students will show up. It's called School Spirit and NU has none, but that's a very old reality. The Sabres are either at the bottom or a hair away with their attendance numbers. If you can't put a competitive team on the ice or court, why should people feel compelled to attend?

WNY turns out for 2 things, the Sabres and the Bills. We manage to play a bunch of games the same days they do. That’s problem #1.
Then, the school does zip to drive attention to sports. They need to think of some creative promotions or incentives to get the students into the gym.
