Lois, Edgar Cayce pretty much killed off the utility of the word "prophet" as well. Prophet, seer, and revelator don't conjure up images of Jesus Christ any more. They make someone think of the cliched magician, or "knower" who is in every action story to fix all the problems of the young hero. After all, in Star Wars, we find that the "knower" lies to the hero all the time on account of the fact that the lie is expedient.

Sounds to me as if the leaders of the Community of Christ don't want to be recognized for what they are. Soothsayers, seers, fortunetellers, prophets, and whatnot, are all fakes these days, who tell people what they want to hear in exchange for material or political advantage. If homosexuality is a problem, the seer tells the community that Almighty God is angry with them for rejecting perversion itself, (not for rejecting the pervert) and that they need to have an "attitude adjustment" to get them to match the seer's own personal prejudices on the subject.

If money is a problem(as in the late 1970's for Jerry Falwell) the "seer" has a vision of a 900 ft tall Jesus who says that he will cash in the prophet's chips if the needed money is not forthcoming.

Alternately, visions of Jesus swinging from the rafters of the temple, grabs the sword of Damocles, and uses it to dispense blessings on select groups of perverts.

If one does not like one's profession, one should change the profession, not the name of it. The change from "mortician" or to "funeral director" doesn't change the profession any at all. One is still handling dead bodies, and arranging for their honorable disposal, along with all the perceived ritual uncleanness that goes along with the business. Folks who don't like others to be consciously aware of the fact they handle corpses have to change jobs. The same is true of "seers."

George
