My main problem with Mulder being gone was that it was, as you said, completely out of character for him. No way on earth Mulder would disappear like that, even if his life were dependent on it. The only way I could reconcile that in my mind was that Scully, knowing the danger Mulder was in, somehow convinced him to leave. But at the same time, it didn't make sense to me because why couldn't Scully go with him? What, exactly, was keeping her in Washington, D.C. and with the FBI? I mean, I know they had to create a story, but I didn't buy it. Somehow I think they could have done better. I don't know if you ever watch ER, but it reminds me of when George Clooney left ER to become a big movie star, and a few episodes after his character leaves Carol finds out that she's pregnant. There was no way on earth Doug Ross wouldn't return to Chicago, but according to the story, when Carol tells Doug about the babies, he just stays where he is. That always bothered me because it was SO out of character.

I really liked Doggett. I thought Robert Patrick took what little was given him and made the best of it. I didn't warm to Monica until the end of the series, though I always liked the dynamic between Scully and Monica.

After Mulder was gone I never had a problem with Krycek interacting with Skinner, since that had been established back in season six with the nano-thingies. But the episode where Doggett and Krycek fight in the parking garage...I mentioned this when the episode first aired over here...I felt odd about it, as though Krycek were somehow cheating on Mulder.
