Up here, most of our towns are small, our sheriff's departments have to cover large areas and the pay isn't all that great. As a result, the small towns have A cop who also has been deputized so that they can help cover the major roads and highways to help out with investigations, etc. without a lot of territorial snags. These folks work alone. I cannot remember the last time any of them had a full-time working partner like Mulder and Scully.
