It's funny because this show used to be such a huge part of my life, and even episodes I loved back in the day, I've forgotten so much about them. It's like watching again for the first time.

I had somewhat forgotten all about Jeremiah Smith and the farm with the Samantha clones and Mulder's mom having the stroke and the CSM bringing in the bounty hunter to heal her and Mr. X crawling to Mulder's apartment and writing SRSG in his own blood and Mulder meeting Marita for the first time. Oh and Scully biopsy-ing hers and Pendrell's small pox scars! DAMN THAT IS GOOD TV.

And for stand alones, does it get any better than Quagmire and Wetwired and Unruhe (which I the last one I've watched).

I agree with the synopsis about the arc of the show. Seasons 1 and 2 was, I think, good "sci-fi" tv. A number of clunkers, but the myth episodes were right on and the characters were awesome. The last episode of season 2 through the end of season 5 catapulted the show into the awesome for any sort of show level, transcending just sci-fil. Seasons 6 and 7 were the downward turn. Still very good, but I think it was impossible to keep up the intensity of 3-5 forever, plus the myth was getting so unwieldy that it was hard to get a handle on. Seasons 8 and 9...well you know.
