Subject: Professional TV critics do *NOT* understand CC

I work at a newspaper, which means get a lot of chances to read the Associate Press wire and lately I've come across several TV critics who have written columns on "The X-Files". All of them say exactly the same thing I've been saying all summer. It *WAS* a great show, but they should have ended it with Season 7. Nobody is looking for forward to a semi-Mulderless eighth season.
The thing that all the TV critics are confused by is: Why?? CC had the chance to go down in history as one of the most innovative TV creators/producers in the past 30 years. He had a chance to end the show with grace and dignity; with the original stars intact and with a natural "bridge" to the next movie, which the DD and GA had expressed enthusiasm for. He also had the chance to create one of the few enduring movie franchises of the past 30 years. Unless you count the really schlocky stuff (like Halloween the 13th on Elm Street) there have been only three successful movie franchises in the last few decades: Star Wars, Star Trek and the James Bond movies. "The X-Files" could have easily been the fourth, with a new XF movie coming out every three or four years.
Yet, CC chose to turn his back on this possibility in favor of endlessly doing "just one more" season of XF on TV. Why?? Is it the money? How much money does one man need, anyway? Also, in the long run, wouldn't he make more money doing movies?
