Unless they were married in another country, a marriage certificate would have been one more piece of a "paper trail" that could lead the Feds to them.

While marriage is the ideal--a good strong, happy marriage that is, how many married people do we all know who are totally miserable or completely happy. I think it's about 50-50 with the couples I know personally.

It's sort of like life in general. A quality versus quantity philosophy. Both their parents had been married for some period of time. Mulder's torn apart by CSM and the things he had done to their family--Samantha being taken instead of Mulder, etc. Scully was from a military family. Most military families I know personally understand they probably won't stay forever in one place. Whether it's mom or dad (or both) there is a always a chance of being sent somewhere else, moved anywhere needed, etc. The higher an officer moves up the ranks, the greater the chances of moving more often are greater than the enlisted.

I've been told by a clergy friend of mine that in some faiths, a couple living together is considered to be married in the sight of God. In that sense, the same rules (outlined in marriage vows) apply to them as to those who chose a wedding.

Perhaps Mulder and Scully, as Kenamom said, have something far stronger happening in their relationship. Not everybody has been abducted by aliens, experienced black oil, seen and fought super soldiers (or Xena princess warrior, hehehe) and so forth. These two have a background together that none of us could or would ever experience. I can't think of any television couple whose relationship has been so "tried" as theirs has been for the series 9 plus 6 more years. AND they are still together which is something their married parents couldn't accomplish.
