"*Gasp! Det lost her eye, didn't she? Where is it? Maybe Aunt Madge can pop the little bugger back in?" KM grabs the emergency worker by the lapels of his shirt and shakes him.

"All right lady, knock it off," he hands KM a glass jar with an eyeball floating around in it, a staple firmly attached to the retina. "But that wasn't the bad news."

"It wasn't?" CW is right behind KM, all thoughts of tomatoes and peas flying right out of her head as she eyes the eyeball.

"Of course not, because the news didn't concern me," KM tells her brashly and immodestly.

The worker coughs lightly to regain their attention. "The news is from KS. When she heard we were coming to the klub, she sent this note for you."

"Oh God, don't tell me it's another birthday list!" CW groans. "I just found her old one." She holds up the bloody and tattered list she'd discovered in the gutter.

"Well boy, don't just stand there, read the bloody note!" KM hisses at him. Det has walked up to the little group, a patch of stained gauze over her left eye socket.

"It says: I know the rule about IOU's never being honored and I won't accept IOU's as a birthday gift!" The emergency worker scratches his head at the odd message.

"Damn!" KM hits her forehead with her fist. "My plan won't work. Now I've got to get her a present."

"There's a P.S.," the emergency worker continues. "It says: I think Rabid is a vampire. Please add a stake, string of garlic, and a large, wooden cross to my birthday list when you find it."

"D'oh, everyone knew that about Rabid," Det chuckles deliriously.

KM turns to look at Det, just remembering her recent injury. She barks at the Bubba: "Bubba! Go to the hospital with Det in case Aunt Madge can't replace her eyeball. You can lend her one of yours!"

Argh! Bubba thinks. He almost got away with it.

Kande chooses this point to race down the stairs from my office as the group is beginning to leave for the hospital. "Wait! The klub is only half-decorated and the cake hasn't been baked!"
