Continuing on...

Brian was the first business manager of the Stones (hence the original leader). True point here as he set up the gigs and made various contacts to get the Stones noticed... all true. It was also true that Brian was the one who set up the first auditions for a record deal through the connections he made including various demo records that were (eventually) turned down. All true. It was Brian that met with ALO which in turn turned out to be the first record deal that was negotiated by the Stones. Who's signature was on the first record agreement made by ALO and Eric Easton? Brian's signature was the only signature (representing the Stones) on the recording contract made hence the sole ownership to the name "The Rolling Stones". Very interesting fact here since he was fired out of his own band in 1969, his signature being the only signature on the original document, one could argue he owned the rights to the name "The Rolling Stones". Could this (at least partially) have led to his untimely death in 1969? Surely, by various accounts and rumors, Brian could well have been on his way to suing the Rolling Stones for kicking him out of the band or by going on the road without him and using the name "The Rolling Stones". One thing is for sure, after ALO took over as the manager of the Stones things were never the same for Brian in "his band".

ALO choosing Mick and Keith to write the songs. True. Did ALO ever give Brian a chance to write for the Stones? Apparently yes he did. Who knows how much (again various accounts states that Brian wrote songs but that they were not very good or he never brought songs to the studio to record). True again. Although there are numerous stories of Brian or Bill coming up with riffs or bits of a song that were turned into Jagger/Richard compositions. This is very much true... anyone remember Ruby Tuesday or Jumpin Jack Flash? Also, if Brian ever did bring in a song he was flatly told by anyone within earshot (see Jagger/Richards) that he COULD NOT WRITE SONGS. Now who was putting down whom? Who was being the ass holes then?

Vendetta's... Jagger Richards both regretted not being the one's who believed the Stones would ever make it big in the first place. True, and because it was Brian who had that belief their was definitely a jealousy/vendetta held against Brian for the rest of their careers working together. Mick and Keith could not stand the idea that it was Brian being the one who took recognition of being the leader of the band and they used that against Brian. Mick really hated it and after being signed to a record deal Brian and Mick's friendship that had developed prior to being world famous never flourished. If anything, diminished, with Keith being the one both fought over to seeing who would have "control" over the band's direction. Almost every time Keith (99%) would choose Mick over Brian. Add in ALO's influence and Brian was being cast aside within his own band. More directly, after Jagger/Richards started writing songs and getting credit for all of the songwriting then Brian's influence within the band was nearly gone. All too true.

1964 was the first year that Brian was cast aside in their stage presence to live audiences and TV appearances. True. Prior to 1964, it was always Mick and Brian sharing center stage and Brian/Bill singing back up. After ALO came on board Brian was pushed into the back ground and it was Keith who sang back up. Brian even had his Mic taken away and was now only a guitar player in his own band. Fewer songs included Brian playing harp so that more (most) of the spotlight fell directly on Mick Jagger (with some being on Keith) only. All true, watch TV/concert appearances prior to 1964 and after. Almost all the spotlight falls on Mick only. Very little camera shots fall to Brian. Various camera angles show Mick and Keith much more than to say Mick and Brian. Subtle changes like this were made to show who which band members the audience should follow and like. Who made this decision? ALO most likely with Mick and Keith obvious approval since they were living together at the time in 1964. Did this stop Brian's popularity? No!! This only made Mick and Keith more jealous and pile on Brian behind the scenes (make fun of etc...) and try to diminish his influence. Think Brian liked all of this? No way!! By all accounts and friendships with various artists Brian complained all the time that he was being pushed aside. Was Brian being paranoid? Nope. All of this is true and no doubt adds to the guilt that Keith and to a lesser degree Mick must have felt much later on after Brian died. After this all happened, Brian then started to take more drugs and being more difficult within the band. Coincidence? Yes, true again!!! If it was my band that I started in the first place and I was told I was NOT going to be center stage, could not write songs, would not be allowed to even sing back up then hell yes I would have rebelled in anyway I could. Brian did all of that, but one could argue that it was Mick/Keith were the one's being difficult and acting like little children ... but since Mick and Keith are the only one's still alive to the tell the story they state Brian was the one being difficult, an asshole, not easy to work with etc... whose fault, really, was it? Interesting question, no?

Well I have to run... more on this later!!

George
