There was a night that Ill never forget. It scared the shit out of me. He had called, was in a state over something, so I went over and he was trashing the apartment, just throwing stuff around and was very agitated, talking erratically, whatever. I tried to make him sit down, which he fought and shoved me. Not hard, no violence, let me make that clear. But the next thing he just fell over onto the floor on his side, in something like a fetal position with his legs pulled up. I crawled over and he was rigid, like stone. His pulse was weak, but he was breathing. I panicked but couldnt make him move, or even be aware of me, so the only thing I could think of was just hold him. This went on all night. In the morning he kind of "came to", Ive no other way of putting it. He sort of surfaced. He told me he was very sorry Id had to see that and thanked me for not calling the doctors. He said that happened from time to time. He didnt like people knowing. I cant call it a seizure, but truthfully, I dont know what else to call it. I have a friend who has seizures from a childhood head injury but they are more like seizures, not like what happened to Brian. Its just one of the things that I think could have happened the night he died. He could have just tumbled into the pool in that state and drowned. He had been left alone and one thing I know is you never leave someone who has been drinking, and Brian did have a drinking problem, alone near water! There are other things I think he might have had wrong as well. Ive researched and discovered he had a lot of symptoms of a hereditary condition called Alpha 1 Anti Tripsyn Deficiency. My husband had that, as do my kids, and in 1986 when my husband died from it, very little was known about it. But it occurred to me that Brian could have had it since his symptoms were identical to those of my husband. Its a very common problem, but dangerous only when you have it to a certain degree. It attacks the lungs and liver, and are exacerbated by drinking. My husband was an alcoholic. So was Brian. I cant prove it, only another autopsy could do that, but Ive thought about it for years. This condition was completely unknown in the 60s, no one would even know what to make of it in autopsy or medical exam if they saw it. Look it up, see for yourself.
