The last time I saw Brian he was fine. Drunk, as usual, but fine. We took beers out to the workmen then sat by the pool. Thing is, when he was drunk he seemed soberish, sort of like alcoholics do when they just drink to maintain.
Theres a word in Portuguese, saudade, which is one of those words with no discernable translation, but one meaning is "one who is sorely missed", or "times lost but never forgotten." Thats how I feel about those days. OK, I dont speak Portuguese but I lived in Provincetown amongst a lot of Portuguese fishermen, and thats a word that stuck. In writing this book, a lot of stuff has come back, but more as a feeling than as something its easy to put into words. I get a lot of flashbacks to odd things like Brian smiling, or crying, or Syd Barrett talking to the people in his head wearing a goofy expression, or the night I met Tim Hardin in Woodstock and he was sitting at the grand piano giving me an impromptu concert while I sat there 5 months pregnant with his Golden Retriever across my lap. It was a crazy life for a bunch of years, but Im glad I had it.
And yes, those people were just people with the same issues and dreams as the rest of us, but they had better houses!
Thinking about the last time I saw Brian is difficult. It was just such an ordinary day, and then he was gone.
