All 13 scholarships are filled. Two (Easterling and Jackson) will redshirt and Porter is recovering from off-season surgery and apparently is still with the team. There are two walk-ons - Maji and DiGiulio - who play the last few minutes of garbage time.

Griff, Have you heard any legit reason why the 2 freshman are redshirting? It looks to me they needed all hands in n deck.

As with most freshmen who get redshirted, they both have things they need to get better with before they are game ready. For Easterling, it's physical maturity (He's 6'11" and 210 lbs.) and developing his game offensively - he averaged 4 points a game as a high school senior. It's my understanding that him redshirting was understood when he signed. For Jackson, it's not so much the physical part (he's a very good rebounder and defender) but has work to do with his shot and game on the offensive end.

With Easterling I definitely understand. But Jackson, It’s really a head scratcher for me. He is probably your best on ball defender on the team. He can get down hill better than anyone outside of McMillan. I understand the shooting part of it. It’s crazy that we have a team this bad and kid who can contribute to winning isn’t playing because he needs to improve 3 point shooting.

Scholarships are technically year to year but if you get into the business of bouncing kids out simply because the one you thought was good, isn't good enough, it makes recruiting kids in the future quite difficult. You don't want to be known as the coach who just runs kids. It's typically more common for there to be an honest conversation and for the kid to make a decision and voluntarily leave and go elsewhere.

There were 1,900 basketball players in the portal at one point last off-season. We'll see how the lack of COVID years, impacts transferring, but most schools are going to see significant roster turnover annually.
