Re: I've seen enough - it's time to go D3 except for hockey -- Franklin, Fri, November 22 2024, 7:52:28
Mid major basketball success is (or should be) cyclical. Sure, we are all little embarrassed by the Griffs start. But after years of putting up with Reggie's disappointing and dull program, I'm willing to give Christian some time to assemble a program we can be proud of.
IMO, Hockey won't move our visibility needle and has minimal impact on student applications. We just hosted #4 Michigan State, whose fans were very well represented, for two games and drew 1,600 and 1,700 fans. Two games vs Army combined drew 1,500. How much hunger is there for a stepped-up hockey program in WNY? Hell, the Sabres games are riddled with empty seats.
Christian starts winning, enthusiasm will return. Just going to take some patience.

Been wondering about the same thing myself. The main question is what drives enrollment, I doubt anymore students attend Canisius because it is a D1 school unless they are recruited to play a D1 sport, actually wonder if there might be more students interested in attending if they thought they had a chance to play a sport, I would assume this has been analyzed at length by the administration. Not sure what ncaa rules are anymore regarding playing one D1 sport but I think it used to be ok. I would think many schools have to be considering options, however schools like Lemoyne and Mercyhurst have moved to D1 this year so there must be some reason for that, maybe it is just the name marketing that comes with D1 affiliation regardless of success that drives decisions.

But, going to DIII means no more$100,000 payments from Maryland and Arizona and our admissions office will be even more dependent on WNY students as we lose interest from kids outside this area.
As a localized university, we would compete athletically against many schools with superior facilities and resources. Think Hobart, Hamilton, RIT, Univ. of Rochester, Fisher and Ithaca. And, we would owe $1 million to the MAAC to leave. Not a viable alternative
