Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- Griff, Fri, February 07 2025, 7:29:05
I think what he is saying is that he hopes JC is pissed off or as fired up as he is in his post-game interviews while he is on the recruiting trail. That's how I took it. Not that Andreo and Javante are pissed.

OK, I can see that interpretation (BG was an English major). So far this recruiting season it looks like Coach Jim has two very good ones. Let's Go Griffs!

Hold on. "Sucking"? What does that mean? Jim Christian and his Staff came on board last May or so and started to build a program that had become a wreck. That takes time. "Sucking"?

There are 68 new coaches in division 1. Only the Griffs and Green Bay have 2 wins. For how long are we going to give this program a free pass? 2 wins! We aren't talking about another losing season or being 11 and 18. We are talking about 2 wins! 2 wins! 2 and 20! Completely unacceptable!

How many of those 68 coaches inherited a team with one or two returning players, because everyone else had left in the portal?
Yes, we need to quit sucking. Unfortunately, it will not happen overnight.

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- Typical unrealistic mindset, Sat, February 08 2025, 4:35:29
What do you think that the guy comes in & then POOF everything is fixed? No way. Also with NLI, it’s a whole new process. I know it blows that we only have two wins but give the guy & program a chance. If you really wanted change & cared about the program coaches like Parrotta & Witherspoon would have not lasted so long. Go Griffs!

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- Franklin, Sat, February 08 2025, 10:55:56
Point right Bill Maher for the state of the program.
Allowing his pal Witherspoon to stick around at least 3-4 years past his expiration date was a horrible mistake that helped send this program to the bottom of D1. How he sat by while attendance lost what...about 600+ fans a game(?), and watched as Reggie eroded all fan interaction, is baffling. It was the same crap with Parrotta. When he was finally let go, we got extremely lucky with Billy Baron following his father here.
Hopefully, Christian can turn things around soon. He has his work cut out for him. But hey, at least he can go about his work in peacefully and undisturbed as both the entire WNY media gang and basketball fan base seems to have forgotten the Golden Griffs exist.

Yes, lots of this is true. Rachel Lenzi of the Buffalo News is at every game. They get coverage but not much to talk about. 8 games left. Let’s beat Niagara on Wed. for at least some local pride. Go Griffs!

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- Cager, Sun, February 09 2025, 6:35:00
Sad, but true. What has happened to D1 basketball in buffalo is a terrible shame. Hopefully, our program will be much improved next year, and fans will just have to remain patient. I think if they start winning, attendance will come back. By the way yesterday I was watching the game, and when it became painful to view, I switched over to the NU game vs Quinny. Down by 8 with about 2 minutes remaining, the Eagles suddenly hit several 3's, and came away with a one pt victory. Very similar to the game against the Griffs. Could this team pull a St. Peter's come March. I was somewhat surprised with the gym at Merrimack. It made the KAC look like a palace. Go Griffs!!!

That's their secondary court. They play the vast majority of their games at Lawler Arena - which doubles as their hockey arena.

A quick look on line shows seating in Lawler Arena of 2,549 (about 300 more than KAC) and in Hammel Court seating of 1200 (1000 less than KAC).

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- BfloGriff, Sun, February 09 2025, 12:34:35
OK, It's a Hockey arena that can be used for Basketball. But it's no Fairfield. Acording to the Box Score attendance was 1,186. BG's hope (and prayers) is that the Griffs someday (soon) have an Events Center where the Basketball arena part holds attendance more like Bona ( with an indoor track like they have at Villanova). Hope that for next season CU will be able to start to grow Bonaesque attendance. Go Griffs!

Merrimack obviously shares this facility with their hockey team. They play in the Hockey East Conference which is one of the best in all of college hockey. Griff hockey should get them on their schedule. Actually, if ever Canisius would abandon the KAC, and build a new facility it would most likely include an ice rink. Go Griffs!!!

Really good hockey program. They just beat #19 New Hampshire.
Go Griffs!

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- C.R., Mon, February 10 2025, 13:12:44
First I would like to thank you guys/alumni for allowing me to share my thoughts on team as a fan from afar off. With all due respect to current Coach Christian which seems like a nice guy; Ive been really having a hard time trying to understand the thought process behind Canisius passing on a coach like Jordan Fee. What he did at Gannon University(unheard of in NCAAB history), and the Coaching Tree he comes from(The most winningest percentage head coach in NCAAB History- The Legend himself Coach Jim Crutchfield), makes me wonder so many things. For sake of time, the Crutchfield Tree has proven to be roster turnover proof(which is a must in this new era of Portal/NIL). Coach Fee basically made a whole new roster in one year and made history! This is what's needed now when you don't have time to build a roster before suffering attrition.Would love to hear you guys thoughts on this. God Bless!

Fee was an interesting story and was discussed here considerably. It's my understanding that at the end of the day, they wanted someone more experienced - especially D1 experience. That's why it came down to Christian, Curran, Donlon, and Copeland and ultimately Christian and Curran. I know too that there was some question as to whether or not the frenetic pace he employed at Gannon would be successful at the D1 level.

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- We liked Jordan., Mon, February 10 2025, 16:26:12
He was also interested in getting more experience at a rising D1 program. FAU came calling when he was being interviewed.
Jordan joined the staff in the spring of 2024 after the hiring of head coach John Jakus. We didn’t offer the Canisius job until after the Final 4.
His record as Head Coach was impressive. He immediately led the Golden Knights to a school record of 32-3, earning a spot in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in the 2023-24 season.

And good for him. Never said they didn't like him, sometimes the timing just isn't right. He'll get the experience he was lacking and will likely get a D1 head coaching opportunity at some point in the future.

Not only would it have worked at a school like Canisius on this level, but it is working on the highest level of basketball as we speak.

Ok we get the Jim Crutchfield thing. And he's "choosing" not to get in to the D1 coaching mix?
Teams are scoring 140 points at the "highest Level" as we speak? Which teams are those?
I saw Gannon play twice last year and the pace is much faster than anyone at the D1 level. That may work against Penn St. Dubois but you aren't doing that against St. Peter's or Merrimack.

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- C.R., Tue, February 11 2025, 8:49:58
The nytimes article i posted confirms what im mean by the "highest level". Current and past NBA(highest level)championship head coaches have learned and adopted styles from coach crutchfield. And they have also come and sat at his feet to learn. If it can work with the best basketball players in the world, I think it can work with mid-low major college basketball players.

Re: I really hope Christian recruits pissed -- C.R., Wed, February 12 2025, 5:55:49
I understand that thought process very well, but we all know the definition of insanity is doing the same things expecting a different result. We have to be Bold and cant be scared to step out on faith and think outside the box when making coaching hires, especially nowadays(No time to build an roster). Continuing to hire retread coaches on the decline of their careers(because of living in old past time/NOT recent success) will not cut it in today's game.I believe this is what leads to many stagnant(underperforming) mid-low major programs who refuse to change "Status Quo" mentalities. Appreciate your feedback!
