Hi people

Err... before having the publication printed, we can try planning the website over the summer (or get it ready), so that both things can be launched at the same time
It is important for the editorial and website people to share the same ideas, and decide what should be printed and what should go online (division of labour..?)

Frankly, who's designed a website so far? Apart from "who knows how to use dreamweaver, flash, fireworks, and all those programs?" and "how good can you do?".... I don't know why I volunteer for the website job, as my practical knowledge is so limited comparatively (I presume...).

I recommend you (if you're interested in learning webpage design) to take a look at www.webpagesthatsuck.com . Most of those are golden rules, and you can't even bend it..... but~ it really depends on what we'r gonna put in a site~

Another one is www.netgenes.org (also check the link to Retina) which is made by my net friend. It's only a page for his secondary school in Hong Kong. In terms of content, it is different, as most pages are more "information-nal" for student. But should we aim for a clear design, and have a clean area to present our work? Or maybe we should assign a page for everyone involved to show their work, so that they can mess theirs up as they like? Or are we leaving everything in one big mess?

It's a long vacation so I hope something will be going on constantly around here. Sorry I won't be able to do the sponsorship thing as I'll not be in the UK for the whole summer. But I'll try compensating that with my dedication .... to this forum and the website... yeah I'm only talking and giving "advice", not doing anything practical~ :..(

I've done several website, my own currently being redone, one for a crappy coach company, another for a Dentist. http://www.davidpullen.org.uk/site (unfinished) ( bear in mind they arn't meant to be innovative as they are done for quite conservative clients, and also i help update the website http://www.whynotassociates.com.
I know dreamweaver pretty well, also i know how to set up forms, guestbooks, message boards. In dreamweaver i know how to handle dynamic html, behaviours, and other tricky things, flash i have a good understanding but i'm not a master (i.e. i'm currently learning actionscript)
My Director knowledge is basic i don't uderstand lingo yet.
I am also starting to learn javascript

some nice sites to maybe think about are

http://www.requiemforadream.com this site won a dandad gold award, and is one of the nicest websites i've seen it challenges the boundries and certainly makes you think.

http://www.studioaka.com go to interactives

other clever but quite dull sites; (they all look the same, but show interesting stuff you can do in flash and dreamweaver)

http://www.submethod.com
http://www.presstube.com
http://www.statedesign.com

, i quite like sites that take a refreshing angle on the internet like the requiem site, rather than the over flashy ones.

I've checked all the sites Henry recommended....MMmmm
Is Henry the only one who can do those things? We cannot carry out "division of labour" if that's the situation...
I hope everyone can do some basics...

Hey! Who still have the details of that Dreamweaver course at the beginning of July? Date, time, venue??? But anyway I'll find some way to improve my skill..... I've *started* flash, director and dreamweaver.
***

Flash in Requiem looks more like a parody than anything else. We can visualize our idea with the interactive media in the same way.... not necessary using flash to show that "hey look, we can do flash!" You know it doesn't mean you have to do it.

I don't know how long it'll take if we go "flashy"...? Is it a good thing if the site is flash player natvigated (or with HTML version as well).... Or will everyone who want to contribute to the site have to do some flash??

i think your right jenny, the problem with flash is the fact that its is annoying to update. With html/ javascript (apparently this is quite easy to learn) we can (to an extent) do exactly the same as flash but more updateable This is resonable fiddly.

On the other hand if we are doing one issue a term updateablity might not be an issue

If anybody has any ideas, interactive sketchbooks, messageboard/discusion forum, layout, colour etc

Maybe two sites, one flash, one html, linked from the first page.

see http://www.designmuseum.org

the main thing i think is to keep it simple and effective, one that functions on as many browsers as possible,

we could have like the magazine, twenty odd sections each could be whatever each person wants, possibly different to the magazine ?

hello all, I really like the idea of having a mix of flash and html stuff. we could have them as differnt sites like on one of the sites henry recomended, i dont know. I think we should maybe try to keep the site as experimental as possable using what ever we want to get the effects we want. I think for the nature of this magazine updateability on the sites probably isn't a very important factor.

Thanks to Henry for telling us the sites.
The idea of exploring the boundaries sounds interesting, but these sites are bit noisy to me.

as Jenny and Henry says,
"the principle of KISS"
(keep it short and simple; keep it simple shit!)
is what we should go for.

The visual identity of AND Website should not only present crossing boundaries. It also shows difference between the two areas (what ever). In this sense, AND is interesting word because it connects two words and at the same time, it admits that the two are different.

In AND Website, may be we can use just two colours in one page.
Two colours, for example black and orange, and you can use colours similar to orange and black. Different level of the colour shows the continuity and the change of identity. When does orange become red, or yellow?

Even the layouts are different in each page, if you use just two colours; it helps people recognize that it is a page from same site
This could be a strong visual identity.

If you want to put colour pictures on the page, I donft think there is a problem as long as it can be seen that the page is composed from two colours.

Trough the continues changes of environment, boundaries, surfacesc how does things keep there identity??

I forget to raise this point in the meeting~

So we've to print in one colour only, But can we change the ink colour between different posters? What about the paper? Can we get coloured paper, or paper with texture (maybe like the one they have in Paperchase, ignoring the $$$ part)?

If we can get different colour of ink and paper, we can print using colour as a link between each poster, for example:

1) Black ink on White paper
2) Yellow ink on Black paper
3) Blue ink on Yellow paper
4) Green ink on Blue paper
5) Orange ink on Green paper
6) Red ink on Orange paper
....
Or go the extreme:
Green ink on Red!
You get me? The colours of the ink and paper will be a chain, a cycle.....
Maybe it's not a bright idea though~ And we have to wait till some paper sponsers show up......

i should have siad that
i was talking about the website.

i have not thougt about the posters.
if the web and the poster works the same,
do you think it will be boring, or
it helps to visualy connect the two?

if we can get several colours
both ink and papers, it will be great.
though we have to run around for sponsers!!!

what I meant here is:
you choose the two colours you want in each
page. if first page is brown and white,
next page could be black and yellow.
though you still have to consider which colour matches which.
