Nira blinked. Once again Melln was only a collection of sparkling dots, the clusters outlining his alligator form swirling around in cosmic alignment. They fused together in places where friction created extra energy, as his tail on the chair. It was easy now for Nira to see his outstretched arms through the wan light, bright pinpoints as they were. Here now, this was something she understood! After all, throughout her entire life everyone had been asked Nira for something, whether it was as a personal attendant or a waitress or a servant. This universal gesture that the librarian now executed broke through the blockade of numb stupidity, striking a rare nerve in Nira’s brain that ordered the next response. She nodded ever so slightly, fearful of disturbing the currently quiet throb behind her eyelids, and just barely lifted the tome from her lap, skeletal arms faltering precariously. But now that the ‘command’ had been given, it was only Nira’s nature to obey. She slowly lowered the volume, practically dropping it in Melln’s grasp when it became too heavy, then leaned back into the chair.

The inquisitive-probing glint still remained her eye, however laid back she appeared. What would happen now? She knew that the alligator Vhistael had wanted the book, but why? A thought flickered through her mind, but Nira quickly dismissed it before it could act as a catalyst for the Aching Eyelids. If she was in trouble then she would be punished, as she always was when she touched things she shouldn’t. Maybe… Nira’s golden optic brightened with an astonishingly pure hope. Would he shape the sounds for her from the runes upon the page? Would he take her to another place, as she had seen older ladies do for their offspring so many times before? It would be a dream, a divine fantasy of wonder and excitement to be taken on one of those settled journeys, Nira was sure! Oh, if only he would! If only, if only…
