Subject: Fifth's eagerness, coupled with Purge's driving will, might have been his downfall....
In reply to: Rana 's message, "Rana knew they were there..." on 07:28:08 10/28/01 Sun

Webbed feet and long, spindly limbs, leapt and bound, covering the distance in far greater time than the other Paleguard present. Hindered by the whipping winds and freezing snow(despite Braddock's coating and Cortex' shell), they were still a good distance away. Fifth recalled little of his life before Purge claimed him, but the Manarian wizard's scent, his almost tangible mystic aura, raised the hackles on Fifth's neck as any natural foe would. Even before he had aimed his gauntlet, the air before it was tearing, snow and ice inhaled by an ever-expanding voracious void.

If eyes there were beneath the craggy shell of Cortex, or some other sensory means were available, the silent Paleguard recognized the danger before the others. Fifth had opened initially a very small rift into Nullspace, hoping to breach the Manarian wizard's protective barrier. But a rift into a vacuum, a place where matter, light and energy are swiftly consumed, where literally nothing exists, cannot reasonably be expected to remain at a fixed and controlled size without some exertion of will or control. Coupled with the spell of reversal cast moments earlier by Rana, Fifth's fate was a foregone conclusion.

Ahead of Braddock and Coba, Cortex suddenly stopped. The Paleguard leaned back, arms spread apart as both gauntlets glowed darkly. Cortex hovered a few feet above the ground, reaching forward...forward...

Fifth yelped as the tendrils of darkness turned greedily upon him. Then from within, he saw the glint of first one gauntlet, then another. In a criss-cross motion, Cortex shoved Fifth free from within the Nullspace dimension, sending him tumbling back over the snowbanks. With ease, the hardened Paleguard stepped free, nothingness still clinging. As the void devoured shell and gauntlets alike, some balance or shift occured, and the void itself was absorbed into the figure standing between Fifth and Rana now. The Nullspace portal sealed and the danger passed for now, Cortex turned to face their potential foe, ready to battle by more conventional means if necessary. But if the first use of Nullspace by someone other than Purge or Cortex and proved nearly fatal, albeit with the added x-factor of Rana's reflective casting, how would the other Paleguard fare when it came their turn to test their control?

"Nature abhors a vacuum, and if I can only walk with sufficient carelessness I am sure to be filled."
