Subject: Leveling the field

I played quite a bit last night and I noticed some significant differences in game play on various maps (for me anyway).

Pestul, I think, had (has) some issues with ping on certain maps and I have found the same to be true. The new garage map has such lag that I cannot play it at all. This got me back to thinking about what factors lead to success and a desire to understand them.

From what I gather, there are three factors:
1. Frames per second (FPS)
2. Ping rate
3. Skill level

Now, I know we would all like to think that it is ONLY skill, but that can't be true. Put a slightly higher skilled player against someone with a better FPS and ping rate and I'll bet the odds are evened out.

So, what I would like to do is take some data. I can get my FPS, but how do you track ping rate while playing? I can do it before logging in, but how do you see it while playing? Or, better yet, if there were a way to track the info from the server, much better. DJ, since you are setting up new systems, can this be done? A controlled environment would be the only way to really test this at some point. Then we would need to figure out why some players get such varying rates of ping by map.

Not sure if anyone is really interested in all this, but it crossed my mind and I thought I would share. :-)
