I guess we take sides in discussions.

What I really mean is "joining sides".

You see this a lot. Where it isn't the argument or the event, it is the person that is in contention.

For example, if SAK & Sola both did not celebrate Christmas and WOG did, then that would become a source of contention.

I think the backup part comes second. First is the personality issue.
