In reply to: Robsy 's message, "10 FAMOUS MOMENTS ON THE FIELD OF PLAY" on 05:59:30 02/13/02 Wed

This one is a small incident and is maybe inferior to the other greatest moments. Aber were hosting the touring team called Wardend, or West End Unity as they called it. As is the custom, the tourists were invited to bat, and totalled a respectable aggregate on what was an early season greentop. In reply, Aber found themselves indebted to star batsman Iwan Roberts. He hit what must be seen as his finest century to take Aber to victory. It was the intimidation he encountered during his stay at the wicket which must grade it as his best performance.

The pich proved to be suited to the tourists quick bowler, who troubled Roberts with some intimidatory short bowling. Roberts took on the chin the abuse that came with each short ball. However, the consistency of the short balls and the accompanying abuse eventually became too much for him.

As a ball thudded into the funny bone on his elbow, the bowler came down the pitch to show off the pride in his craftwork. The trouble was that the bowler insisted on voicing advice in his native language - urdu. Being a man of high moral standards Roberts, took offence at the fact that he was been insulted, but more so in a language that he couldnt understand. As a result, he proceeded to answer the bowler back in his native language - Welsh. This exchange became heated, and resulted in intervention from the umpire - Mr Nye Ghosal, who chose to communicate in English. As a result, a three way conversation resulted, with neither able to understand the native tongue of the other. Aber's guest non-striker, Mr Nigel Edkins felt left out of this, as he did not have a different language to fall back on. Having briefly courted the idea of speaking in the small amount of French he had picked up on holiday, he decided to rest on his bat, and join all in the pavillion in laughing at the scene.
