Rhayader have not beaten Aberystwyth in years, and touch wood that will not change for some time (the thought of Carwyn's face if they are victorious will send this author to an early grave!). Instrumental in this successful run has been Iwan Roberts and his batting. One cannot help but refer to his part in a record partnership with AR Price (1999), and numerous other match winning innings. However, it is last year's game that provides a source of great ammusement to all that saw it, and proves that Roberts is indeed human and foolish.
In fielding first, Roberts did not appear to be his usual self. Not patrolling the covers with his usual dash and elan, there appeared to be something on his mind. With a number of new players in the team, the emphasis was on Roberts to set an example. But he appeared annonymous.
Suddenly, the chance was there. The ball ballooned off the back of Dylan McPhee's bat in his direction at point. One could almost imagine the collective sense of assurance that Roberts was underneath the skyward red object. In the textbook style, Roberts removed his cap, positioned himself in the correct position, reversing his hands to create an appropriate cradle for the ball. Celebrations started prematurely - "YES, YOU F@#*ING BEAUTY"
But it wasn't to be. Collective shock ensured, as the ball somehow went through Roberts' hands, hitting him in the chest on the way to the ground. Roberts looked like a pathetic peasant in looking for the ball on the floor, before looking up at the sun and putting his outstretched arm up in an animated gesture that the sun was in his eyes.
This thing happens in cricket, and there was soon gestures of sympathy and encouragement thrown in his direction. Indeed this author was intending to show his solidarity by gesturing in the same vein at the end of the over. But rather than my going over to him, one found Roberts comeing over to me and uttered the following memorable quote:
"Fuck me Williams, I am still pissed as a fart from last night!"
