This author's debut season for Aberystwyth was spent predictably in the second XI, captained by Alun 'can't turn milk' Davies. In addition, it proved to be Davies' debut season as captain due to a wholesale change in personnel from the previous season, largely as a result of a number of players leaving for university. Davies succeeded the popular Bryn Roberts as captain due to the latter's retirement, although tales of legendary behaviour still remained.

One particular tale stands in the memory for the amount of times that it was told. It took place in a match between Gwerinwyr and Aber II's that was played on the now abandoned Synod Inn Oval. The said ground was in itself legendary for having the shortest square boundaries in the league (even shorter than OJ Park!), which proved enticing for your average six-hitter. Whether Roberts senior had a reputation for big hitting or not, on this particular day he fancied the chance of clearing the small square boundaries.

It is unknown at this stage who the bowler was, but Bryn decided to take him on. Deep (!) square leg was the intended destination, but the ball never went anywhere near there. Instead the ball headed in as vertical a trajectory as one can imagine, so much so that most individuals were straining their respective necks at its direction.

Many of the Gwerinwyr fielders stood a chance of catching the ball. In the end, one particular fielder called and set himself to catch it accordingly, at a spot not at all far away from the batsman now cursing his luck. Whatever possessed such an impulse reaction, no one knows, but moments before he was due to be caught, Roberts decided to take out the fielder. Legend has it that the fielder was flat on his backside when the ball hit the floor.

The fielders appealed at this obstruction, an appeal that was turned down by the (probably Aberystwyth) umpire. Bryn Roberts' defence for his actions were along the lines of that the fielder was in his line. he still denies to this day that he acted inappropriately.
