    • He couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm and brightness- she was like a breath of fresh air for him. He returned her hug, winding his strong arms around her lithe, muscled form and hugging her just as tightly , taking comfort in having her so near again. She didn;t expect her to have waited around to waste any more time on him, but he was pleased to see him if nothing else "I missed you..." He confessed- which was a lot coming from him. "I tried calling last week but you didn;t pick up... and I don't leave messages... hate the damn things." His accent was as strong as ever, mumbled against her beautiful blonde hair "Don;t you know cell phones were designed so you can take your calls anywhere?"   • "I missed you too, god. Who would have thought?" She gave him one more, perfunctory squeeze, inhaling his scent and smiling to herself before she reluctantly released him. "Well honey, until they make a water proof one, you're SOL, and you're going to have to leave a message. I'm sorry I missed you. Sit down, we have a lot of catching up to do - three months worth, at the very least!" She sat back in her seat, drawing up the chair that was meant to be directly across from her beside her instead, and moving Duke's lazy paws out of the way so as not to pinch them under the legs of the chair. • He felt a cold chill pass over him as she talked about catching up, and a dark shadow passed over his features, releasing her and sitting down with his coffee. "Yeah... we do have a lot to talk about... Theres somehting you should probably know before you read about it..." It would no doubt be out in the next edition of the surf magazines she subscribed to- the ones they'd both bio pages in that was the bases of their very first conversation together. • She raised a brow but that didn't stop her heart from sinking a little when he said that. She had no legal claim over him, it was true, but he could imagine the gossip section of Surf Monthly with a couple of shots of him with the latest hot topic that was down under for training, schmoosing and canoodling. She was a big girl, she had seen those things before. She put on her brave girl face and tipped her head in his direction. "Oh? Sordid secrets to tell?" A veil of what felt like doom and gloom had fallen over their conversation, over their table, and she didn't like it - she wasn't an exceptionally serious girl. • She felt a bit like someone had rammed a cold steel rod down her throat and for once in her life, she was left speechless. She sat rigid in her chair as Duke shoved his nose under her hand, suspecting something was amiss, and pressed her lips together, taking deep breaths that did nothing but flutter down through her lungs like butterflies making her only all the more anxious about the entire thing. "... your.. wife?" Perhaps she had read more into this than he had ever intended, perhaps she had made a fool of herself -- she was embarrassed almost, feeling that she must have missed something in one of those bios in one of those magazines that he had mentioned - although she had scoured for every article she could find about him when she'd met him on the beach that afternoon. • His brow furrowed a little at her reaction- He had expected this in all honesty- but it didn;t make it any easier to handle. "We were seperated... its one of the reasons I came here... we kept it very quiet... small wedding- just our parents there.... but it didn;t work out... " He lowered his gaze, frowning a little before he glanced back up to her "She died Ais... she was bleeding too much and they couldn't stop it... she lost too much blood and her heart stopped..." It was still pretty painful for him, even if they hadn't gotten along by the end of it. She was still the mother of his child- the child that he actually knew was his now.     • If the situation had not been so sombre, she would have been proud of herself for not interrupting him, but she sat wordlessly while he carried on, saying things she didn't want to hear. She cared about him - obviously, so she could not just imagine that this had never happened or was not happening like she most typically would to ensure maximum fun and carelessness in her life. She wasn't sure how to take in everything he said but focused instead on the baby being his... "So... what are you going to do?" Her pale eyes flickered up to his but found it difficult to hold his gaze more than a second or two before she averted her own after the things he had said about her making life better, and here she was feeling so selfish and guilty.     • He cocked his head to her a touch, brow furrowed a little in uncertaintly "What do you mean?" There was nothing to do really- he was a father and he had a child that needed raising- so he would raise it. • She blinked a little, and nodded, putting words to her question - she was still feeling really disembodied, she wasn't sure exactly how she was meant to be acting. "Well... did you bring the baby back here? Did she have family there that wanted to keep it?" She was trying to figure on how a baby would change his life, change the way that their relationship worked, change his surfing career - She swallowed a bit and then closed her fingers around her mug of chai that was going cold. " It wouldnt effect his carreer that much- he would perhaps have to stay more local but he was at the peak of his career- he was right at the top- not struggling to get there- so things were a little easier for him. • She sat quietly for a moment with Duke's head shoved in her lap, her lips pursed and working slowly through her teeth - She wasn't sure what she wanted to say, how she wanted to feel, or what would be appropriate in relation to what she actually wanted. It was a pretty big pill to swallow. Finally she looked over to him, meeting his eyes, her own looking for some trace of insincerity in this whole thing - they had developed something of a bond and she didn't want to have to think she was just a temporary sort of thing. She wasn't a mother, that was for certain, nor did she ever plan to be one -- now was not a time for her to start. She was still digesting this stuff, slowly, and her fingers worked methodically across Duke's natural ears. "What does this mean for us, Andre? Is there an us?" In a way, I think it's noble that you've got him and you're doing right by him when you could have walked away.... if I were in the same position, though, I don't think anyone would find it at all romantic or noble." She shifted a little and Duke shifted with her, his head still stuck comfortingly in her lap. "I don't know, Andre, I think I have to think about things. It's strange. You always know in the back of your mind that the person you want the most has been with someone else but this makes it real is all." She sighed again, pleased to finally get some of her words out.
