In reply to: Just an idea 's message, "Safesport- I wish teenage dancers had to do the safesport course as well, I didn’t know I was being groomed and abused until I was done with Irish dance. I had to do the same course for a coaching position and it made me sick realizing what my teacher (an ADCRG) did, literally broke all the rules." on 14:28:23 09/03/24 Tue

I'm very sorry you went through this. This in no way excuses abusive behavior, but the reason so many TCs are so skilled at passing abusive behavior as normal is because they lived through it themselves and either didn't recognize it as abuse or thought it was justified for results.

There is a long, long culture of abuse in Irish dance. The "big split" that occurred in the late 1960s caused the TCs who remained with CLRG to push their dancers to the limits to prove that they were the "true" Irish dancing organization. Many teachers were absolutely evil in their treatment of dancers especially when the CLRG World Championship was established in 1970 and more was at stake. Many of these dancers grew up to be the TCs we have now and they have chosen to maintain the status quo.
