It seems to me like categories 2+3 are often so blurred that I'm not sure whether they aren't two faces of the same medal.
It's usually exactly the people who "need to belong" that benefit from their presence in UBF by being made "feel special", and that, of course, is best accomplished through flattery, titles, something to be proud of, etc. An elitist mindset will make feel people "belong", and if I'm honest, from my personal perspective, if you don't buy into UBF's elitist "we are God's Work" propaganda, you will never fully feel from the bottom of your heart that you belong there.

But I would agree that type1 is the most pleasant category, I would call these people "the cult base", but not since they're so cultic or so base, but because they're the kind of people that get the hook out. A group that doesn't have a decent share of this categroy will not be successful, since the lack of these people will revulse outsiders (and new converts). It's also this group of people that provide a desirable pattern to those who are young and naive, but seeking the Lord.

You'd see that in pretty much all cults, type1 is the ones that make you think "well, they can't be so bad" and type 4 are the ones that pull the strings.
Type 2 and 3 are "tag-alongs". Nobody really cares about them, neither the leadership nor outsiders, since they're usually bound to the group "for better or for worse", so they need no stronger bondage, only the current level, and outsiders will feel that conversing with these people about meaningful spiritual issues is, at best, a waste of time and care.

In Christ,
Mike K.
