hoops -

Thanks for your comparisons.

" It appears to me that Taylor has been given free reign to bring anyone into Lehigh. Last year a senior transfer, this year a juco player. The same thing goes on at American. What's the difference between this and what goes on in the MAAC or A-10? "

I don't know if Lehigh has significantly altered it's admissions floor to include 'anyone'. There's nothing inherently wrong with transfers or kids coming from JC's. As with HS recruits, it's the quality of the kid - and not just in academics - that should be the general criteria in admitting any student-athlete.

That being said, I'm getting an early feeling that HC/Willard are beginning to fall behind or come back to the rest of the Patriot League in men's basketball. Despite winning the PL and the NCAA appearances, I'm a little surprised our recruiting efforts over the past 2 years haven't yielded more talented kids. The edge that we had with full athletic schollies is now fading as others go the same route. Coupled with the now well known advantages that all other PL members enjoy in larger recruiting budgets and established booster clubs, the picture isn't as rosy as it was 3-4 seasons ago.

I'm not really sure what you're looking for in terms of recruits. They brought in a point guard who is highly regarded and a 6'10'' kid with a lot of upside, which is a very rare commodity. They've done very well with kids like Simmons and Hamilton, both of whom had multiple mid-major offers. Simmons, in particular, was the target of a bunch of schools. All in all, the staff seems to be doing a pretty good job. Some of these kids are clearly not your run-of-the-mill Patriot recruit.

I would tend to agree with Curious that the recent HC recruits are of high quality. In fact, I really think the backcourt is going to be dynamite next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see Simmons really break out.

What seems to have happened, though, is HC has relinquished its hold on frontcourt dominance. The quality of play last year of the 4-5 positions for the Cross was not up to the standards set by the Sankes/Whearty/Szatko crew, lets face it. And, at the same time, the other schools made inroads in their recruiting of inside guys.

This concerns me for next year. To me, at this point in time I look at 3 players as being key: Nate Lufkin, John Hurley and Kevin Hyland. They are the only upperclassmen frontcourt players returning, and whether its individually or as a group, improvement is needed. We talked a lot about the lack of post up offense last year, but frankly, the post defense was soft by HC standards too. And things won't be any easier for them next year.

Hopefully the boys are hitting those weights, and in the case of Hurley and Lufkin, hopefully someone can help them take advantage of their quick feet and teach them the ole Kevin McHale up and under move...

I hope I'm wrong....

But I'm looking at our returnees plus the 5'10" 155lb. Doherty and a 6'10" 260lb. kid who appears to be a 'project' and I think of our very recent grads like Sankes, Serraville, Wilson, Jerz, Whearty, Szatsko and Meade and this 'early' look of mine tells me there's been a fall-off in talent.

And I'd add that Lufkin has not improved - some might say he's regressed - since his very productive frosh season.

The fact that he's 5'10'' 155 lbs is not important. What is important is that he performed very well last summer and caught the interest of a number of programs. You can't judge a recruit's worth based on his height and weight, but his game.

If Clifford were polished at 6'10'' 260 lbs, he'd being going to the Big East. Kids with that kind of size and reasonable skills are few and far between. Again, another kid who played well last summer and is well-regarded. He'll be a good kid to work with in the PL.

Again, I hope I'm wrong....

I think you may have missed my main point.

Given our 3-straight PL titles and 3-straight NCAA trips where we aquitted ourselves well versus national powers in Kentucky, Kansas and Marquette and add in the victory over BC at the Centrum and even our showing on the road versus Louisville - all that in sum over the past 3-4 years - has the talent level of our recruits improved markedly ? Have we taken advantage of our success and the positive publicity ? What youngster have we landed that we wouldn't have had we not had that success and positive publicity ?

Specifically, are the recruits we've signed the past 2 years - including these 2 above - better than, equal to or less talented that what we have recently had in Sankes ( transfer from Rutgers ), Serravelle, Whearty, Szatsko, Wilson, Jerz and Meade ?

AIR ( someone please correct me if I'm wrong ), when Clifford's name first surfaced I did a search on Insiders of their Top 100 'big men' rankings nationally as well as for the Top 25 in the northeast. Clifford wasn't listed. Forget the Big East....do we know if any A-10 or MAAC schools made bonafide scholarship offers to him ? I don't recall where Doherty was ranked in the northeast or what schools above the Ivy/Patriot level made confirmed scholarship offers to him.

To be blunt, who did we beat out/steal these 2 kids from in the recruiting process as indicative of making 'hay' off our success/positive press ?

Is it possible that a 6'10" high school basketball player whose team won the Mass State championship, and who is an excellent student just may be interested in accepting a scholarship to play at Holy Cross for Coach Willard, and nowhere else?
