In reply to: ZD Ranch 's message, "I put out blended fertilizer. I normally put out 34-10- 25 per acre in Dec. or Jan. I usually pay for it in Dec. and get a bit of a price break. After that I just use 34-0-0 but normall put 150 lbs of it. Not this year though. No more fert. this year. All my cattle will be in the Panhandle eatin' corn in 2 weeks. Cattle are gettin' cheaper and grass is gettin' shorter. I have plenty of grass but am saving it for when I can buy some cheaper steers this Fall. Because I bought my fert. last Dec. It only cost about $250.00 a ton for that hot blend that I use. They deliver it 7 tons at a time and spread it for $4.00 an acre. What it boils down to is that $50.00 worth of fertilizer made 3.75 big rolls of hay per acre that are worth $50.00 each but it cost $17.00 to get it bailed. Ranchin' isn't a very good business right now but ownin' land is. Last year our land was sellin' for $800.00 and this year it's sellin' for $1,400.00 an acre. Two years ago my land was worth about $800.00 an acre. Now it is worth nearly twice that. I am on the same highway that Tyler is on but about 100 mi. West. The very small, back yard rancher is gone from our area. They may still live there but no longer run cattle. It's just not worth their time and many of them are just too old. There are no locally owned banks left here. The folks that used to buy a few cows with borrowed money they got by just a telephone call to the banker won't mess with the 'chain' banks loan application. (NT) -- ZD Ranch, 12:58:53 06/13/06 Tue

  - Have you heard about that new grass you can run 10 cows to an acre on? I have heard people talk of it. It has some kind of name only a scientist can pronounce. But its some kind of air plant grass. Suppose to do good in lots of places. Only feedback was if it was allowed to get to high it got moldy underneath.     - It's easy to sit for me. I look at 70 miles south of us along the coast and the land is double what it is here. I look another 70 miles south of there and its triple.
