Color Formulas for Banners

http://pga.com

This banner used analogous colors, the blues within its design. But there is also green
added. I was unsure if the blue and green qualified for a nature-based color scheme (blue sky/green grass). The second web site mentioned the importance of selecting appropriate colors for the product that is being advertised. I though this site did a good job of that. The blues and the muted green seemed to represent golf well.

This banner used a soft pink and a soft blue, with a light tan as a page background. I thought this had to be classified within the analogous category. Though the colors are not closely related, they are all muted and calming. Again, I feel the designer did a good job of selecting appropriate colors for the site. Antiques are well represented by soft colors.

This site used complimentary colors, not those opposite each other on a color wheel, but ones that contrasted each other sharply. The gold and the black colors used create the “maximum contrast” mentioned in the first color matters page.

This site also went for contrast colors. The page background is white, while the banner background is black. The second color web site mentioned the use of color to direct the eye to the most important feature. I think this site does this well. The eye is drawn the EXPO icon. The bright yellow/green also contrasts sharply with the black banner background.

This banner used analogous colors also. Again, they are not related colors, but their shade is related. The colors are very soft and pleasant to view. This banner does two of the suggestions for success: fitting colors are used for the product advertised (soft, muted for a spa whose goal is relaxation) and the creation of a pleasant visual experience, where common attributes connect the banner and page. I really like the color scheme of this page.

This banner used analogous colors; the deep orange is lightened in the cursive version of Oprah. Then, the background is white. I think the printed word Oprah written in the deepest shade of orange is a fair example of using color to attract the eye to the most important feature.

My favorite banner! I believe it uses complimentary colors to create the contrast. The black and white contrast is sharp. The stark white seven directs the eye to the number seven. In the formulas for harmony, the term creating “maximum stability” was used under the complimentary colors section. I do not quite understand what this terms means.
