hi guys. came across this board today and emailed tracey, who was super wonderful to me. so im six and a half weeks and im actually pretty darn excited. my boyfriend is miserable, but has promised to support me in anything i do, and he will. we're young. im 24 and he's 25 and this was not what we had in mind. we thought get married at thirty babies at thirty-five. anyway, that's not an option now. abortion is, and im totally pro-choice, but im confident that i can do this. but should i be this confident? i kinda feel like a dumb kid who is in love with the idea of having a baby and that i just assume that we will all be ok. ive read through all the other posts and i feel confident that ive come to the right place. i also think ive made the right decision, even if i keep second guessing myself, and even if its not ideal. both my darling boyfriend and i just got laid off our jobs and are a bit of a mess. we have some money saved, but its not enough to buy a house or a car or anything like that. but i have faith we'll pull through. here's my question...ive never had a baby before. and im sick as all get out. i cant eat anything, have terrible heart burn, my back is KILLING me and ive been told the only thing i can do is take tylenol. oh by the way, i also have a terrible cold, that im going to have to just suffer through. any suggestions? also i have an appointment tomorrow with an agency that is going to help sign me up for kids care which is a free insurance program for children that the good state of illinois offers. so it covers me til i have the baby. yay! anyway, i am looking for any and all suggestions for anything that has anything to do with what i should expect from my body and what i can eat to help with this horrible heart burn. thanks guys. so much!

lots of love-

danielle

Hi Danielle,

First of all, C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S !!! The wonder of a new life in you is always a miraculous beauty, even when the circumstances outside the womb don't always line up just as we'd like.

And welcome! I'm really glad you found this place; it's awesome. I'm also really happy for you that you've found peace and confidence with your decision to keep your baby.

I wouldn't feel too bad about the 'wanted to wait until 30 something to have a baby.' It just puts you in the company of countless women throughout the generations whose lives didn't go exactly as planned, including myself. ;)

And in most cases things roll on just fine anyway and we find ways to adapt to an unexpected tapestry woven into our lives.

From a biological standpoint, as you probably know, you're at the ideal age for having a child, so maybe that's a consoling factor on the timing.

About the heartburn and nausea, I don't have much to offer about the heartburn because I never experienced it during any of my pregnancies, but I sure can relate to the morning sickness. I had incredibly easy births, really just so much simpler and amazing than I expected birth could ever be, so when I look back on anything 'traumatic' about being pregnant it's always the morning sickness I had in the first trimester, lol. I would take giving birth to that any day!

The good news of course is that it usually goes away at about 12 weeks. Mine did like clockwork. Some women find it persists past that but not nearly as severely. I just found that my sense of smell remained very sensitive in the second and third trimesters, but the nausea went away completely. As far as surviving those first weeks, I didn't find a whole lot that helped, lol. There is some merit to taking some plain bread or crackers in the morning before you get up, I think, but it wasn't a miracle cure for me.

My greatest help was mint flavored lifesavers. I found when I sucked on them it distracted my sense of smell from being so reactionary to everything. Gum would probably do the same. I definitely learned to stay away from big meals and eat more small ones.

Hopefully someone else has some insight into the heartburn thing. Have you heard of/purchased the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting?" It's a huge, huge help to first time mothers in that it asks and answers literally any question you could think of to do with pregnancy and childbirth. You can find it at any bookstore - it's very common.

It sounds like you're already on the ball with looking into what resources are available to you. Most states do an excellent job of taking care of pregnant women and their children's needs. Pregnancy Resource Centers are in most major cities, too, and they can be a big one stop shop of resources to help, too.

I hope your boyfriend comes around sooner rather than later. I'm glad he's supporting you regardless. Often being able to see the ultrasound is huge for the man involved, so you may want to consider scheduling one of those. You can tell whether or not your baby is a boy or a girl as early as 13 weeks! The visual of seeing the little one really helps to process things. It's one thing to know there's a little human being in there with your mind. It's another to actually see them moving around, waving their tiny arms or kicking their legs. With one of my ultrasounds, we saw our daughter sucking her thumb while she was making little cycling movements with her legs. I forget how far along into the pregnancy I was, but it wasn't very far.

Anway, welcome! I hope you keep posting and give updates.
And again, congratulations on your baby. :)

With Kindness,

Heather

Hello Danielle!

First of all, welcome to the board, I am glad you found your way here. Also, congratulations on your pregnancy! This is a very exciting time for you!

I do not think you are that young. Ladies much younger than yourself have had a baby and raised the baby and done quite well!

I do not know all the particulars of your situation, like where you live, what kind of work you do, etc. What I can tell you is that no matter your situation, there is always hope!

I am 38 years old and I had my daughter who was an unplanned pregnancy 3 years ago at the age of 35. I will tell you, I thought it was the end of the world, although there was a small part of me that was so excited! Although I never considered abortion, I had no idea how I was going to make it through. I will not sugar coat it and tell you all went well. My daughter and I have had our problems and have struggled, esp financially. Her father is not in the picture, but he does pay support and pay very well!

I can not imagine my life without her! She is everything I wake for and my last thought when I go to sleep. She is an amazing little person and watching her grow from a tiny baby into this little 3 year old full of wonder has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I could gush over her for paragraph after paragraph, but my point is that you can do this just as I and most, if not all of the ladies on this board have done.

There is a wealth of help and information that you can get. There are all kinds of programs for young and even single mothers.

You can do this with your boyfriend, and you can do this without him. We are all here to help you through this and let you know that you are doing the right thing.

Who knows? Three years from now, you will probably be on here writing this same message to a gal who is in the same situation as you once were. Much as I was.

Good luck Danielle!

We are here for you!

With love,

Lisa and Sophie

Danielle,

CONGRATULATIONS!

Another awesome program you should get as soon as possible is WIC (Women Infants and Children). It's through your county health nurse and provides you with vouchers for lots of wonderful, healthy food (like eggs, beans, peanut butter, iron-fortified cereal, fruit juice, mild, cheese). It will even provide your little one with formula for a year and healthy food vouchers until he or she turns 5! (If you decide to nurse, instead of formula, WIC provides YOU with healthy food for a year while you nurse and then provides your little one with healthy food vouchers until he or she is 5.) It's such a wonderful program. And, the income ceiling is very high (meaning you can make quite a bit of money and still be eligible for WIC.) You sign up through your County Health Nurse.

As for morning sickness, I found it was "all-day" sickness! ;-) One thing you might try is to have some saltine crackers by your bed and eat a couple BEFORE you get out of bed in the morning. Having just a little something on your stomach can help. Also, NEVER take your vitamins on an empty stomach - that's almost a sure-fire way of getting nauseous ;-) BUT, the good news is that morning sickness usually goes away after the first trimester (when you reach about 12 weeks.)

Also, they measure the number of weeks of a pregnancy starting from the start date of your last period. So, if your last period started on Jan. 1, you probably ovulated around the 15th and conceived right around then, BUT they actually count the pregnancy as starting Jan. 1.

Yon mention you're pro-choice, but I really encourage you to visit some of the post-abortive support sites. It's also a good idea to view pictures of fetal development (and maybe even pictures of what abortion looks like, even though those are very difficult to look at.) The reason I say that is that I've heard SO many women say 'If only I knew - I thought it was a blob of tissue'. It's important that you be fully informed. This is your own little one growing inside you and he or she has only you to protect him or her.

You're right, this is a very supportive board! I'm glad you found us ;-)

I'll say a prayer for you.

Sharon

Hi, Danielle!

Congratulations!

I was 22 when I had my first child, and like you, I was confident, and I did just fine. He has been a wonderful son. He's now 40. We also raised six other children.

You're better off having your children when you are younger. It's easier, and there is always the risk that if you wait until you are 35, you will never have a child at all! You are a very good age to become a mother.

What your political views are doesn't have a lot to do with what you personally choose to do. We have several women here who probably share your political views, but decided to have their babies, and like to talk to the women who visit.

I never had any trouble with morning sickness, for which I am grateful. However, I do have some suggestions. Try sipping a little ginger tea or ginger ale when you are having a problem. Also, some people said eating watermelon is good (if you can get it this time of the year, that is!) The crackers before getting up are a good idea, and take your prenatal vitamins with a meal. Eat smaller meals. I don't know as much about heartburn, but try the ginger and see if that helps. You can probably do research online about it.

As for your back, I think people say rocking exercises help. On hands and knees, arch your back and let it slump, and rock back and forth. You may have some little displacement, and for that, low velocity manipulation is awesome. Some osteopaths know this, and there are other practitioners. And as for your cold, stay away from products with mint or menthol in them, because this will dry everything out and make it worse in the long run. They say vitamin C is good, but probably mineral ascorbates are a lot better. I use EmergenC. Citrus juice (such as orange juice) is also very soothing, if you can sip on that when you're not feeling nauseous. And if you can handle it, cayenne also is very soothing (in spite of the fact it would seem the opposite, provided you can handle the spiciness; depends on your normal diet). For the immune problem, probably colloidal silver works best. The silver involved is a very tiny dose. People take it for ten days just like an antibiotic. These are my experineces; I am not a doctor and can't tell you what to do. You can also research these things online. I hope these things help.

Hugs,
Pat

I hope this morning sickness passes soon! It should end by week 12 if not sooner. I hated morning sickness, but by your second trimester, I always felt so much better. We look forward to hearing from you!

Danielle~
Hello! Glad to hear the heart-burn is gone! I HATED when I had heart-burn during my pregnancies! I carried around Tums everywhere I went! lol Also, great news with WIC! WIC can be such a major blessing to women in need! You may want to try and contact some of the CPC I gave you(I know the list was long). But, they may be able to help you in finding a part-time job, that will be able to give you a little extra cash. Please continue to come back and keep us posted!
You are in my prayers!
God bless,
Tracey

Hey, Danielle. First of all, congrats on the pregnancy, and I know you're scared. I found out I was pregnant just after I turned 19 [I'm 20 now and my daughter is going to be four months old on Monday!], and both my boyfriend and I weren't ready to have a kid. And, I'll admit, it is hard, physicall, finacially, and emotionally, to deal with a baby. But it is possible. But just go with what you feel, and I really do hope things work for you.

As for the morning sickness goes, I really can't help much there. I ended up just having to suffer through all of it.

Anyway, sorry this really isn't much help... But if you want, you can email me whenever. I'm always on the computer and always willing to listen...
