it does drive me crazy when I see people in their late 20s playing teens on TV. And people who are my age (late 30s) playing twentysomethings.
One of my favorite examples of "inappropriate age casting" was a TV movie I watched a few years ago where they had Jaclyn Smith (of "Charlie's Angels" fame) playing a woman who was saying things like "I want to marry and have children at some point in my life, but I'm just not ready to settle down yet." Now, JS *had* to have been in her late 30s or early 40s at the time this was braodcast, which just made her comments inane. A woman of that age either wants children, and realizes she she'd better get busy and start trying to conceive them *VERY* soon, or she's content to concentrate on other aspects of her life and isn't really interested in motherhood.
I can see maybe using people in the 18-24 year old age range to play high school students, simply because you don't have to worry about child labor laws, making sure the actors attend school, etc. But beyond that it becomes ridiculous.
One of the things that make XF unique is that it is apparently about the only show to ever reverse this process. The character of Dana Scully was supposed to be 29 when "The X-Files" debuted in September of 1993, but Gillian Anderson was only 24 when she began playing the role.
