Hi Everyone,
Does anyone remember a cruise in December 1980? We flew to Athens then went on to Rhodes, Haifa (Bethlehem and Jerusalem), Corfu, Dubrovnik (before all the bloody bullet holes in the beautiful stone work) then Taormina in Sicily and finally Malta. I cannot remember my dorm. I was from Alsager Comprehensive, and we shared with a bunch of girls from Birmingham. Apologies, but they bullied the shit out of us and I was terrified the whole time. My sister was sick as a dog and ended up in the hospital for 3 days. I was just seasick. I remember doing an ad-hoc fancy dress and seeing the teacher end of the ship - a world away! I lost a ton of weight as food was so lousy. I remember everyone slowly getting off the bus in Rhodes and someone racing to back to tell us there was a cafe that did cheese on toast and we all legged it there!
The weather was vile and most kids were sea sick a lot of the time.
Despite this, it was an amazing journey. It inspired a lifetime of travel for me. To date, I have lived in 6 different countries!
My other abiding memory is of the youngest crew member ringing in the new year. His name was Nick Hardesty, and I lusted after him for years - LOL! Needless to say, he never even knew I existed. I wonder if he stayed in the Merchant Navy or moved on?
Anyway, all the best to my fellow cruise-ees wherever you are.
Becca Hennard
