Subject: Re: Denial in the SA movement - the reason Ive left it!
In reply to: Rosie 's message, "Denial in the SA movement - minor rant" on 19:25:44 06/25/00 Sun

I no longer consider myself a believer in size acceptance thought I still am for fat rights. Actually I have nothing to do with any real world fat groups because of the denial I have indeed seen and the other things you all know I dont like!:)

The denial I feel destroys peoples health in some ways. I know for a fact when I was involved with a real world NAAFA club people would let down their guard so to speak and they would gain weight. The women in the club would even joke about the NAAFA 75! Usually the amount of weight a person would gain the first year in!

I also cannot support NAAFA or groups related to it because of their refusal to find a cure for obesity. I want something that is safe and that works. Id be first in line. There is nothing good to me about fat. It has cost me my health and career and almost my life, so Im certainly am not going to fit into the celebrate fat side of things. >

I too believe that people should be free to be the weight they want though I do belive their is something psychological going on with hardcore feeders who are entering then realm of self destruction. Fat people should not be forced to diet or belittled ever for their weight.

Actually Diets perse dont work and I agree with that, but lifestyle changes do. You notice this is never touched by size acceptance. Try going on the NAAFA board telling them how youve given up butter and margarine for life and how you only allow yourself to eat two bad foods a week! and this will be seen as a diet. No changing towards lower calories for good and better food for good does usually make some changes. I am also of the belief, that fat people do have more propensity to gain weight in general. We are not free like thin people to indulge as much. Sure we deserve our treats too--.....but simply put do have to restrict things further for the needs of our own bodies.
WE HAVE TO TAKE OUR OWN BODIES NEEDS in to consideration. Now I will always be fat because I wont get enough nutrients or satisfaction of hunger at the calories which would keep me thin!! Only lifelong eating habits changes things around and usually this weight loss is very slow. I have explored superfat people who did succeed in losing weight and this seemed to be the method that did work the best. Taking years to lose hundreds of pounds.
There are ways of eating Ive said goodbye to forever, I simply cant afford a few desserts a week. Maybe one every two for example. There is a myriad of changes Ive made. I still have things to change like you do Rosie. I havent been able to give up sausage yet which I eat about once every two weeks to 10 days!!:) Pasta is another biggie for me since I am allergic to potatoes!
My thing is we fat people should just try and do what we can handle. I know too strict dieting makes me sick. This is why Im not down at the hospital which puts fat people on 600 calories a day, this is absurd! I already know I wouldnt last and if I did it wouldnt work!
But to throw all caution to the wind......and I do feel there are parts of size acceptance whether they admit or not who do influence fat people to go this way....is pure foolhardiness!

Fat does make people sick. Now there are many 200-300lbs who can do most things without too much wear and tear but most people who are fat dont want to lose for the simple matter of being more socially acceptable but just because they feel better. Ever 50lbs makes a difference in my life. IVe been on a longstanding plateau now.....but the last 50 I lost gave me the ability to sleep on my stomach for someone in the 300s, losing another 50 may mean they can climb up stairs without gasping!
This I think is the most insidious lie. And this is also why Size acceptance has no chance of growth. people see their sick relatives. I alone witnessed pain of my father from obesity---he was 300 and below but he would tire far quicker than thinner men, witnessed the pain of neighbor who got to 500lbs and died by age 42, witnessed the pain of my ex-boyfriend who had a close cousin who got to 600lbs (this guy dieted all the time he told me and ate normally or lower) and died young. Fat does make people sick, but only to different degrees. Someone at 240lbs may beable to go on hikes and be active but they still will not keep up with their thinner friends. This was me for years. I could walk 7 miles but I was always lagging behind the thin people. Fat does burden the body! To say different is nothing but pure lies. and why do fat people have to lie to be accepted. I dont think we do. I think we can admit we are not well and still defend ourselves against discrimination and demand fair treatment.
every person is different in the weight they can handle. Many people at the size I am now become housebound for good. Many people who hit the 600s cannot walk., I could minimally but then IM 6 feet tall, I do know people who become very disabled at even 300lbs because of their own special body. Also an older fat person will have a lot less mobility so some of these healthy 300lb size activists like Marilyn Wann will soon discover things may be very different at age 50.

Actually through one of my diagnosises PCOS they are discovering more about obesity. There does seem to be a different way that insulin is handled in many fat people. Many are simply insulin resistant. Too high of insulin and those with diabetes do gain weight. They are discovering too Rosie Diabetes adds weight not the other way around.

I do support a good working cure to be found. All the ones they have done so far are pretty poor in terms of turnout like the Phenfen fiasco!

thanks for your post Rosie!!
