Subject: Denial in the SA movement - minor rant

I really need to get this out right now, I hope y'all can put up with me. First off, I want to say this is nothing against anyone personally, or against people making their own choices about their bodies. And it is not a denial of genetics, medical conditions and such.

Also, I believe that no matter how a person got fat, he/she is entitled to be treated like anyone else, free from discrimination, taunts, harassment etc. This also goes for people who don't try to lose weight.

But I am sooooooo tired of some of the mantras the SA movement puts out. To wit:

1. Diets don't work 95% of the time - where on earth does this 95% come in? I have yet to see proof of it. When I questioned my doctor on it, she said it was more like 50% of the time. Well, that means they WILL work 50% of the time.

2. People who diet are automatically going to regain the weight back plus more - well, if you go off the diet, of course you will.

Now, fad diets of course, are bad. First off, they are usually unhealthy, second they cannot be maintained for life. The best thing to do is to eat a healthy menu of good food in moderation. Let's face it and be HONEST with ourselves - how many of us could find improvement in our eating habits? I know I sure could. My weaknesses are pasta and potato chips. (I've managed to cut back on the chips big time, the pasta needs mucho work) I know genetics plays a BIG role in our body predisposition, but I do believe that many of us could lose *some* weight and keep it off if we try. Not that we are necessarily going to get down to what the charts say we should weigh. If we modify our eating habits and get some exercise (you don't have to work out like a pro athlete), we WILL drop some pounds, even if it's only 5.

Disclaimer: this is not to say it will work for *everyone*. I realize there are people with medical conditions that have put on weight and are having trouble getting it off - *waves to Victoria* - I am not talking about these. Diabetes put the weight on me in the form of pasta cravings, but now that I have it under *reasonable* control, I could cut back on the pasta if I chose.

3. Fat is not unhealthy. Bullshit, is what I say to this. Yes, one can be fit and fat and yes, thin people are unhealthy too. But let's get real - how many fat senior citizens do you see? I sure don't see many. It is this fact that has really opened my eyes to reality.

4. We should not try to lose weight because there's nothing wrong with being fat - this is fine IF you are happy with yourself the way you are. But what about those who aren't? What about those who are having real mobility problems who need to lose *some* weight in order to overcome them? Why should they have to resign themselves to a life of immobility?

Mobility is a big reason why I started with an exercise bike a few weeks ago. Because of a bad back, I didn't get out much this past winter, and it really affected me. When it got to the point where I was getting out of breath walking up six stairs to let my dog out, I knew I HAD to do something if I wanted to maintain my independence. The bike has helped immmensely. I can now go up those steps a gazillion times a day. I still have a major back problem but I can get around better than I could.

I've been told by some SSBBW that it can't be that bad as I'm mid-sized, but it IS "that bad" for *me* and that's what counts.

5. Every new weight loss thing that comes out is a rip off and won't work - how do we know that? How do we know that medical science won't find a way for more people to lose more weight and keep it off? It is totally plausible that it *could* happen. People who are researching a cure for cancer or AIDS don't have that "it's not going to happen" attitude, thank goodness!

6. Even if a safe, effective cure for obesity were found tomorrow, I wouldn't take it - another load of crap. Aside from feedees, I doubt there's too many of us who wouldn't do it, if it were guaranteed to work the majority of the time. And I even wonder about the feedees, because I honestly wonder how many of them do it because they think it's the only way to get and keep a man.

Ok, I'm almost done here. I know I've typed a novel, I just had to get it out. I really do feel that the SA movement has to find a middle ground in order to be a success. Thanks for listening and putting up with me. :)
