For a diet to be considered a success means you lost weight and kept it off. 95% of the people who lose weight gain it back. I know I'm one of those 95%. :-)

True. But, who can live life eating what you have to eat to lose weight? Even diet programs have what they call a "Maintenance Program" they put you through at the end to teach you how to eat "normal" and yet, not gain back the weight. By having such a program they are acknowledging that people can't eat like they have to on a diet day in and day out for the rest of their lives.

*Raising Hand* ;-) I know I sure could! But, look at it from this point of view. How many skinny people do you know who eat what you eat and yet aren't fat? Our fat IS tied to our genetics, like you say. Weighing what I weigh, even if I lost 5 lbs. it wouldn't help me to be any healthier. I'd have to lose close to 100lbs. for it to make much of an impact on me. I'd love to do that, but I'm afraid that I'd lose it, then gain it back PLUS more.....like I've always done in the past.

I've heard a lot of people say this and I totally disagree. My grandmother who's 85 weighs over 200 lbs. My mother who's 63 weighs almost 250lbs. My great aunt who is 90 weighed over 200 lbs. until the last few years and now she weighs about 180 lbs. I've seen many senior citizes who are fat and there are a lot of them in my own family! lol

If you are unhappy being fat then by all means you should work at losing weight. But, also work at being happy with yourself no matter what your size. Because getting down to a smaller size isn't going to make you a happier person...it will only make certain aspects of your life easier. To me, Size Acceptance means being happy with yourself as you are right NOW. It doesn't mean that have to stay the size you are....but don't think that losing weight is going to make your life something it's not. That's a problem I had growing up. I thought if I was as slim as all the girls in my class then I'd be popular and I'd have lots of dates and I'd be....etc. etc. etc. That thinking was wrong. I'm happy with myself as I am right now, but I AM working on losing a little weight. Not through dieting, but through being active, exercising, having things in my life that keep me busy.

Rosie, do you have a featherbed? I messed my back up about 15 years ago (that was also 100 lbs. ago) and it gave me problems until I got a featherbed. Now I rarely have trouble.

You're so right! We have to recognize that if someone wants to diet then that's their choice and we've got to respect it.

My personal opinion (and I could be wrong) is that the reason so many in SA are against diets is because they have seen what diets have done to their own health.

Oh, I try SOOOOOOO hard to get my niece not to diet because I look back on my pictures and I see that I weighed 150 lbs. in high school and I thought I was huge and I dieted my way up to where I am now. She's only 19 and she's tried diet after diet and I'm so afraid she's going to find herself where I am and I truly believe if she didn't diet anymore that her body would reach a "set point" and that she'd stay at that weight for the rest of her life. *sigh* But try telling that to a teenager.

Rosie, I thought you made a lot of good points and I hope that you and others in the SA movement will be heard and that one day we'll truly accept each other at the different sizes we are and also accept the fact that some who are fat DO want to lose weight and that it's ok.
