The various media have different reasons for existing:
1) Commercial media have a built-in requirement to increase their net profits, and that governs their behavior. They tend to be truthful if that's profitable, but some will tend to be biased towards a particular group, or propaganda for a particular cause, or (whatever). Usually users in time find out what that bias is, if any, and act accordingly.
2) Political groups use media as a means of getting their point of view across, and we must expect bias.
2a) There are pro-government groups, usually wanting more taxpayers' money and reduced taxes(?) nevertheless; usually they are optimistic and try to keep governments in power.
2b) And there are opposition groups that want another kind of government and also a lot more government services for free, and reduced taxes. They often look for all sorts of "dirt" on government politicians, and their bias, too, is visible and can be expected.
..... Maybe you can add to this list?
..... Trusting is a matter of experience, often statements can be compared with what others have stated, and the veracity or otherwise may be quite visible. Also there may be a policy of unprompted correction of mistakes with apologies, showing that the mistakes were unintended. A media source's reputation may be of utmost importance, and, incidentally, very likely will affect the Net Profits in the long run.
