With everything taken into consideration, the pre-arrival photos, Fadil Berisha official portraits, Allumski headshot close-ups, evening gowns and swimsuits I have finally come up with a Top 20 based on all of the factors mentioned, plus the politics that I think may occur. This year, it seemed like MUC was a little lower in numbers in comparison to the 62 delegates that competed last year, but nonetheless, present a high calibre of contestants, regardless. Last night, the preliminaries proved who the strong contenders were for the title and how easily not dieting or the wrong gown choice can DRASTICALLY change your fate into the Top 20 final spots. There were five delegates of whom, were fast tracked into the Top 20:
AUDIENCE FAVORITE: Barlen Zaro, ON
HUMANITARIAN AWARD: Alexandra Mathews, ON (who rased a record breaking amount for the MUC charities)
BEST IN SWIMSUIT: Sarah Ainsley Harrison, NS
BEST RUNWAY MODEL: Siera Bearchell, SK
PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD: Ashley Callingbull, AB
With that being said there are still 15 semi-finalist spots up for grabs. From the Top 20, 12 will advance after swimsuit and 5 after gown. Ultimately, there will be only one winner who will succeed Sahar Biniaz, as the new universal ambassador of beauty that will represent the country at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant this coming December. I originally had a SOLID top 20 that I didn’t think was going to change (even after prelims), but alas, my Top 20 changed and there was a lot of movement within it. I can honestly say that I have absolutely NO IDEA who will win the title this year. HOWEVER, I definitely have my own personal favorites who have “wowed” me throughout the past week and a half of competition, with some pleasant surprises!
With that being said, here are my FINAL predictions for Miss Universe Canada 2013:
TOP 20 :
20. BARLEN ZARO (Audience Favorite – Fast Tracked into Top 20)
Although Barlen captured the audience, I don’t think she will completely catch the attention of the judges. I find that she is a little too made up, too short and just not strong enough to win the overall title. I do like her sassy style and if she were much taller, and toned it down a little bit, I could definitely see her advancing further than just Top 20. Kudos to her for making an impact at the GTA’s and capturing the attention of the audience.
19. COURTNEY WOODFORD, NL
Courtney had improved sooooo much from her stint at Miss World Canada 2012. I actually didn’t even recognize her. From my recollection, being the only representative from Newfoundland, I think she did a stellar job representing her province. The problem is, I found her a little too safe and generic at this pageant. I wish that she had upped her game a little bit, because the MWC image is still present. Overall, she definitely stood out in my books just enough to make the Top 20. If she is able to advance to the Top 12, I truly hope that she changes into an evening gown that will break her personal boundaries. Perhaps something that is a little more sexy and edgy.
18. SHANDA PARKYN, AB
Shanda is another one that upped her game upon arrival. Her photos were not super impressive at first, but throughout the days, she definitely came out of her shell and her beauty speaks for itself. I think she is in the stronger half of girls in this competition. She has a lovely face, a great figure and a gown that stood out last night. The only thing I see as an obstacle in her making the 20, is a really unsuccessful interview. Otherwise, she is definitely worthy of a Top 20 slot.
17. SARAH FARAONE, ON
Sarah was one of my favorites coming out of the GTA’s. However, the momentum here has not been as strong as I would’ve like to see. Fear not, Sarah is still one of the most beautiful faces, and well prepared delegates competing this year and I have no doubt in my mind that she will make the Top 20. Although yellow was a gorgeous color on her last night, I still found gown choice a little boring. I hope that if she makes the Top 12, she chooses a gown that will showcase more of her lovely figure.
16. RITA HOUKAYEM, ON
Another GTA favorite, Rita looks like she has such an amazing personality. I love the warmth that she exudes when she smiles, and I think that alone will be enough to secure her a spot in the Top 20. Her gown was nice, her body was in decent shape…..I think that I would like to see a different type of styling when she gets to the finals, but overall, she looked gorgeous.
15. DENISE GARRIDO, ON
Our first double crown holder, I think Denise has done a wonderful job in improving her physical appearance to compete in this pageant. She is definitely coming across as a go-getter who really wants to represent the country at Miss Universe. However, I do think that her journey to the crown will be a difficult feat, simply because there are much stronger delegates that have performed extremely well. I think it will be somewhat of an obstacle for Denise to get to the Top 5, but because she has the experience of having competed at Miss World and Miss Earth, I do think that she does know what she’s doing and could definitely make a strong impact with the one-on-one interview with the judges.
14. ANGEL BHATHAL, AB
Angel is a veteran who has competed at both Miss World Canada and Miss Earth Canada (2nd runner up 2012). She definitely is one of the most beautiful faces in the pageant. Her performance in the preliminaries pleasantly surprised me. Her gown was stunning and her body was very fit and ready for competition. I think that she definitely has a chance to make it to the Top 12, even the Top 5, depending on how well she performs during the interview. Although I’ve placed her in my Top 20 only, I definitely think that she has the potential to go even further. Let’s see what happens.
13. LUCIA FUENMAYOR, ON
I wasn’t sure about Lucia when she competed at GTA, but throughout pageant week, she certainly has made a presence made for herself. She has a very pretty face, a petite body and excellent stage projection. Being of Latina descent, I think that her stage presence came natural to her, and thus, doing an extremely memorable job at last night’s prelims. She may be a little on the shorter side, but she is definitely that Latina ball of fire that I would love to see compete for the title, during the finals on Saturday!
TOP 12 :
12. EMILY BONDY, ON
I love this girl’s smile. There’s something about Emily that’s just so effortless on stage, that she simply just stands out. I know that she may not be a favorite on a lot of people’s lists, but I can definitely see her pulling a Venessa Fisher or Leanne Cecile and going all the way to the Top 5. Personally, she has a very inviting aura, and if she makes it to the Top 5 she could potentially win over the judges with the charm that she exudes in photos.
11. ANDREA CVIJETIC, ON
Andrea kept on going on and off my list, finally settling in my Top 12. I think she did an extremely great job during the prelims last night and is a strong representation of Ontario. During the GTA, I was a little unsure as to why she had advanced, but after seeing the photos from last night, I can definitely see why. Her body is excellent and her gown was very perfectly suited to her figure. Total top 12 material!
10. ALEXANDRA MATHEWS, ON (Humanitarian Award – Fast Tracked to Top 20)
Alexandra was a standout to me at GTA, and has been consistent ever since. I love her facial beauty and her very healthy frame. I wasn’t a big fan of her evening gown choice, but considering the fact that she was Miss Humanitarianism last night, I think that she’s going to do extremely, EXTREMELY well. I( have her slotted in my Top 12, but if she performs well during the final, she could EASILY advance her way into the Top 5. Alexandra is the epitome of Beauty with a purpose!
9. MICHELLE MCKAY, ON
Very pretty girl….Michelle has an amazing body and she chose a decent gown that was memorable enough. I think that she is one of the upper tier contestants from Ontario and I do not see her missing the cut. She was one of the best performers last night and her consistency has been ON, throughout pageant week. Definitely Top 12 material!
8. ELA MINO, AB
My heart goes out to Ela. I love this girl and she could potentially have the most beautiful face competing at this year’s pageant. My problem is, that she is so timid on stage that I wish she would bring it up a couple of notches. Ella competed at Miss World University representing Canada, and I think that she did well enough for a spot in the Top 12. Last year, she missed the cut, so I’m hoping that MUC will reward her a spot this year. Her body was fit as usual….her gown could’ve been much stronger, but I cannot ignore this girl. She is just too beautiful to miss the cut. I’m hoping for a Top 12 spot!
7. LIDIJA VASKOVIC, ON
Lidija is amongst the most naturally beautiful contestants in this competition. Although her gown choice was maybe not the best choice to showcase her figure, I still think that her overall beauty will make an impact. Lidija is very fresh to the pageant scene, and even though I don’t see her winning this year, per say, she has all of the raw goods to come back in a few years to win the overall title. She is so stunning that I can see her doing well enough this year to get noticed. She is definitely Top 12 material and I would be surprised to see her miss the cut altogether.
6. MARIYA DAVYDOV, QC
Mariya is like a living Barbie doll. I love everything about her and I think that she will easily make the Top 12. Her body was really good. I found that her evening gown was a little disco ballish, but she definitely stood out with her platinum blond hair. Being of Eastern European descent, Mariya definitely fits the MUC mold, and she is the strongest from Quebec. I think that she has a lot of potential for the Top 5, but it all depends on what the judges want as their choice for the best in Canada. Gorgeous girl in my opinion, and I hope to see her do very well on Saturday!
TOP 5 : NO CLASSIFICATIONS
I simply cannot decide who will win the Miss Universe Canada 2013 title. This is one of those things where we have no control who will make the Top 5. If I were a judge, I would choose the following Top 5 based on beauty and overall package alone. I think each of the following ladies, possess a strong chance at winning the title, according to competitive standards at Miss Universe and would definitely bring the country back to the semis:
ASHLEY CALLINGBULL, AB (People’s Choice Award – Fast Tracked to Top 20)
Ashley Callingbull is a determined competitor hoping to be the very first representative of Indigenous heritage to represent the country at Miss Universe. She has worked really hard to gain a power status in pageantry having competed at MUC 2010 (2nd runner up to Elena Semikina), Miss Humanity International 2011 (4th Runner Up) and Miss World Canada 2012 (Top 10). I think that Ashley came to MUC 2013 to win and I can definitely see it happening. Her performance was very good last night, and because I know that she has a great personality , I know that she will make the Top 5 based on that alone. I know Ashley, personally, and she’s just a lovely person. She is beautiful inside and out and she will deliver a strong competition on Saturday night. Yes, she was fast tracked into the Top 20, but it’s pretty obvious that she is Top 5 material, at least in my opinion!
RIZA SANTOS, AB
Riza is a very good friend of mine. She has worked extremely hard to transition from Miss World Canada to Miss Universe Canada and the transformation completely shows. In person, Riza’s face is perfection, she has an amazing complexion and has worked her body to full potential. Her performance last night at the preliminaries was stellar and she will continue to bring that consistency and determination to the finals on Saturday night. Although Riza is a double crown holder for Canada (Miss Earth Canada and Miss World Canada), I still think that she has what it takes to actually be the first triple crown holder for Canada. I know that she will knock that preliminary interview out of the ball park!!
DIANA MARTIN, ON
Diana’s Fadil shot is my FAVORITE. She has really upped her game since her arrival at MUC. During the GTA, I didn’t really think much of her, but she has transformed to in my opinion, the strongest delegate representing Ontario this year. If MUC wants to crown a home delegate, Diana is the only one I can see actually doing extremely well at Miss Universe. Being of Albanian descent, she would give the other girls on the international stage a run for their money and totally stand out. Her gown last night wasn’t my favorite, but I definitely see her performing even better during finals. Hopefully, she chooses a gown that will compliment her complexion and body, amazingly. In terms of swimsuit, probably the BEST out of the 57 delegates in my opinion.
SIERA BEARCHELL, SK (Best Runway Model – Fast Tracked to Top 20)
Siera is a newbie to the MUC pageant, but comes with great experience. Having won the Miss Teen Canada World pageant and modeling experience, it came to no surprise to see her bag the runway model award last night. Siera is one of the most determined and well prepared delegates competing for the title this year. With an excellent pageant handler and the already existing talents she already possesses, Siera could downright win this whole competition. If she does, she would be a strong competitor at Miss Universe. Her performance last night was simply gorgeous and I know that she will do EXTREMELY WELL at finals on Saturday. No doubt, Top 5 material!
SARAH AINSLEY HARRISON, NS (Best in Swimsuit – Fast Tracked to Top 20)
Sarah has really brought her “A” game to the table. She has DEFINITELY improved soooooo much since last year, and I think that she will do much better this year. Having won the best body award, it’s obvious that she is in it to win it. I think that her prelim performance was good…obviously she rocked the swimsuit competition….her gown was okay for me. I thought that because she has a great body, she should’ve chosen something that would’ve fit her better. However, I don’t think that that is her finals gown anyways. Anyways, I have her in my Top 5 for sure.
So, that’s it. I’m very excited to see who will represent our country at Miss Universe. After not being in the semis since 2006, we can only hope that Canada has learned from their past mistakes and can start a different formula to make the cut. The beauties in my Top 5 are all unique from each other, but definitely stand out. All I can really hope for is a beauty that is strong enough to make the cut at Miss Universe. I don’t even care if we win the title, just as long as we can dabble our feet back on stage. I wish nothing but the best to all the girls, nonetheless. I think they all have done a fantastic job in representing themselves. Let’s see who will be Miss Universe Canada 2013!
