It might all turn out as you say with Spike becoming some variation on human. My husband and I were talking this morning and it seems like they're making a major statement by sending Spike to Africa. First, it's on a different continent on the other side of the world, in the place where the first slayer originated. But more important . . . it's also the first time since Smashed that ME has given Spike screen time that didn't involve Buffy or one of the other Scoobies.

They're taking him to a totally different place to interface with beings that are far away from Sunnydale. And they're even building him special sets. This is all pretty unnecessary if they're just planning on making him evil. Why spend the extra money? It doesn't fit Marti's constant warnings to us about how Spike can't be trusted without his chip. But still, he doesn't need to go all the way to Africa to get the chip out and turn evil. That implies a journey. And this journey may actually be the beginning of one of next season's story arcs. I just hope they're not going to turn him totally human. A hybrid like Cordy (and Buffy for that matter) would probably be acceptable to most folks . . . Let him keep his strength, give him a little sun, that kind of stuff.

Wasn't there some sort of vague spoiler somewhere. One of those things you can't quite remember that stays at the back of your memory. It said that something was going to happen to make Buffy and Spike more similar to each other, to make them different. It would be fun if he met some variation on the original slayer in Africa.

There's another possible interpretation to the Eros and Psyche myth, though. If you add in the spoiler/rumor/speculation that I mentioned earlier from Fanforum, you could take this myth almost directly as is. Eros, the god of love and the very sexual Spike we keep getting presented with this season could be one and the same. He's the one that Buffy/Psyche can only be with in the dark (like at the Bronze). He goes up in a puff of smoke from Darth!Willow at the end of the season and Buffy needs to search him out next season in various dimensions. Who's Aphrodite? Halfrek? The one who made him a fool for love? Is Aphrodite Willow trying to undo her wrongs? Or maybe it's Tara's ghost or some other spirit taking on Tara's form? Anyway, Buffy does these three tasks and gets Spike back. But . . . in doing so she becomes immortal and loses the human normality which she's been so obsessed about. She's given up her one great dream for her one great love.

OK . . . I'm a romantic. I admit it. But you understand, I also belong to the group who would have liked to see Buffy become immortal.
