Howdy Phil

Welcome aboard and please post more. The natives are friendly. Somehow I feel you have a lot to offer, so please share it with us.

From your post I'm guessing you are hunting back east? Appalachian area? "Saprolites" a give-away?

Also, since you used a Garrett BFO and found your first nugget with it; I'm totally impressed. The last Garrett BFO was manufactured about 1978. I started doing a little nugget hunting about 1975. Failed miserably with BFO and TR machines.

If the GB-2 is performing well in your area, stick with it. It should handle the saprolites well. However, test with a carefully buried Jef. nickel at 5 and then 10-inches. Being completely familiar with any machine is critical to success. Also of importance is the local areas where you are detecting. And as you have noticed: Research.
