Hi Chris,

Yes, hydraulic pits are good areas to detect, but expect mostly smaller gold in these areas you speak of. Even most of the remote ones have been hit by detectorists over the years, but nobody ever gets it all. I know several guys who hunt the old pits of the motherlode country, and most finds average only a few grains to 3 or 4 pennyweight. Still, that doesn't mean there aren't still a few lunkers out there to be found. It just takes persistence.

Some of the better areas to hunt are in soil deposits ON or NEAR bedrock outcroppings, and even along the "walls" of the old pits where the hydraulic operations stopped. Sometimes the operations stopped before the gold did, but not very often.

Good luck, and let us know how you do. You have a good machine there, and as a suggestion, you might try the little shooter eliptical coil for the smaller nuggets.

Ralph
