Subject: Calling It Quits.........

I learned this afternoon that Al and Deb Jones of Al's Discount Detectors in Blairsville (GA) are calling it quits and going out of business after many years as one of the best customer service oriented dealerships I ever dealt with. The first time I ever had dealings with them was when they were still in Arizona, doing business as Arizona Al's, then one of the biggest proponents of electronic gold nugget prospecting activities in the southwest. I'm sure there are many of us who have either bought from them over the years, or had contacts and conversations with Al and his excellent knowledge of the various types and brands of machines that he has sold. Al has always been a big help to anyone who would ask for advice, and although he was a dealer, he wouldn't hesitate to recommend machines other than those he carried if he thought it was in the best interest and for the best performance of the potential buyer. It was one of those rare and genuine instances of "putting the customer first".

It seems there are more and more dealers AND hobbyists leaving us these days, much to the detriment of the hobby and much to the shame of some of the manufacturer policies who lately seem more interested in a "pyramid scheme" style of marketing than allowing those who would devote the time, energy, and backing to become something more than the run-of-the-mill garage, spare room, or car trunk dealership. In the long run, forcing out the best of the dealership folks will prove to be a pox upon this hobby in general, not to mention being something that may be looked back upon by DEFUNCT manufacturers who had more concern for a quick buck than for fair marketing standards on the basis of ability and good customer service.

Knowing there are many of us out here who share the same sentiments Al and Deb, we wish you guys the best and hope your future endeavors are as fruitful to you as you have been to those of us in the detecting hobby.

Ralph Bryant
