Chris, I have had a good deal of success at old hydaulic pits. Here are some tips: the nuggets tend to be very small, so use the Mini DD coil on your MXT, as well as QUALITY headphones. For best results, concentrate your detecting efforts on small cracks, and patches of gravel on the bedrock. There are usually a lot of small veins of serpentine interlacing the native granite at such sites, so use the autotracking mode to help tune out the signal produced by smaller veins of serpentine. Also, there is usually a lot of old square nails at such sites, so watch the meter ID on your MXT to determine the target's identity. Since you are a novice, get yourself a good "how to" book on electronic prospecting. I heartily recommend the book "Advanced Nuggestshooting," available for $7.00 postpaid, but I guess I am a bit biased, since I wrote it. Hope this helps; email me for more info. HH Jim
