Subject: Old Hydraulic Mines - Good Detector Sites?

I have been panning and dredging for many years, and I am about to take the plunge and get my first detector suitable for gold prospecting. After doing research, reading this forum and a few other detecting forums, I have decided to get a Whites MXT. As far as gold prospecting, I consider myself fairly experienced, just not experienced at the use of a metal detector in gold prospecting.

I have access to an old hydraulic mine site in the motherlode country of California. I have prospected in Hydraulic mines with just a shovel and bucket - using my hand sluice to run the material in the nearest creek. I've had mixed success with this, but I have found a number of small nuggets in the range of 8 to 10 grains.

I wanted to ask the forum members -

1. Do you consider old hydraulic mines in general as good detector sites?

2. Have you had good experience with this type of site?

3. Do you have any hints on working hydraulic mines for a new detectorist who has yet to find his first nugget by detecting (I have plenty of nuggets found panning, dredging, etc.)?

I don't think this site has been hit much by detectors - its fairly remote.

Chris
