Hi Ron,

Awhile back I made a post on Finders about the idea of using the Fisher FP-10 fluxgate magnetometer as an iron id device used in conjunction with the Minelab SD/GP series.

Find that deep target with the big coil SD. Check the target with the FP-10. Since a magnetometer will sound on steel or iron ONLY, if it signals, ignore it and move on. No signal would mean non-ferrous or beyond range of FP-10 (not likely if ferrous).

I've been planning to try the concept this summer in high trash areas where I've dug some mighty big pits with my SD only to find a spike.

This new item is supposed to do a similar reverse discrimination, and sounds like a magnetometer to me. Except for one problem. They claim it can be inset into the coil - it's a rather small device.

It looks that to get real performance fluxgate mags must have a lengthy "wand". I presume a unit could be made very small, but I would surmise it would no longer have the depth one would need. The FP-10 will pick up my little pocket knife at two feet.

So I guess we will have to wait and see if this thing is for real or just one of those things with enough truth to catch a few people.
